Active Suspension
because im interested in how things work and what they do etc, i wondered after hearing loads on this so-called 'active suspension' what the hell it is and how it benefitted the car in question.
im not sure what a differential is as well and its doing my knut in!!! has this any connection with the active suspension or am i just a bit dense?!  cheers guys |

Active suspension is a computer controlled way of controllon the ride height of the car. It works from a program of the track and accounts for bumps, etc in the circuit. One aim is to maximise the aerodynamics of the car. The aerodynamics are very efficient at one ride height, and less if it raised or lowered. The active suspension keeps the aerodynaimcs at its maximum for as long as posible. Also gives a smoother ride I think.
I think this about right, and there might be other reasons to use active suspension. |

cheers tony,
so they actually assess the circuit and programme into the computer the bumps?! i heard in a documentary that the driver could say that the car was understeering at a certain corner and the mechanics could tinker around for a couple of seconds and it would be ok. if thats true then thats amazing!!! is this outlawed in the present legislation then? |

There was an interesting Interview in the last F1 Racing Mag with Patrick Head.
He stated that the active ride software/hardware had become so good that it could indeed be raised and lowered to alter the handling of the car. If a driver complained of oversteer on entry to a corner and understeer out, then they would raise the nose on entry and lower it again on exit and vica versa. The applications of this went way beyond what most of we mortals will ever understand except to say that any handling variations could be controled whist driving or preprogrammed in the pits. Due to the amazing grip levels attained the FIA decided that they would ban the use on active ride cars from the end of 1993. |
