Fiorentina's British F3 championship thread in a similar vein, got me thinking about how the drivers who won the Australian FF championship either went on to greatness or completely disappeared. Some for the X-Files perhaps?
1970 Richard Knight ????? 1971 Larry Perkins - Aust F2 champ, Euro F3 champ, F1, 6 times Bathurst winner 1972 Bob Skelton - touirng cars in '70s 1973 John Leffler - touring cars in '70s 1974 Terry Perkins - yes, Larry's brother, where is he now? 1975 Paul Bernasconi ????? 1976 Richard Carter - now racing historic Formula Pacific, always on the podium 1977 John Smith - ADC and works Group A Corollas 1978 John Wright ?????? 1979 Russell Nordern ?????? 1980 Stephen Brook APCC, drove with JPS BMW at Bathurst, stuffed the car into the wall and wasn't invited back 1981 Phillip Revell ?????? 1982 Jeff Summers ?????? 1983 Bruce Connolly ?????? 1984 Ron Barnacle - went back to FF a few years later, where is he now? 1985 Tomas Mezera - British FF, '88 Bathurst winner, HRT lead driver and team manger in 1990, now struggling privateer in V8 Touring Cars 1986 Warwick Rooklyn - Now yacht racing i believe ??? 1987 Peter Verheyen ??? 1988 David Roberts ???? 1989 Mark Larkham - now a front runner in V8 touring cars 1990 Russell Ingall - ditto and twice Bathurst winner 1991 Troy Dunstan - always quicker than team mate Paul Morris 1992 Cameron McConville - V8 touring cars 1993 Craig Lowndes - undefeated in ATCC 1994 Steven Richards - ASTC indepents champ and now in V8 touring cars 1995 Jason Bright - was in V8 tourers, now in Indy Lites 1996 David Besnard - was in Us Single seaters, now returned to Aust and, you guessed it V8 Touring cars 1997 Garyh Tander - consistent frontrunner in V8 Touring cars 1998 Adam Macrow - trying to get regular ride in V8 Toruing cars 1999 Greg Ritter - ditto |

- I remember he drove a Corrola at Bathurst some time ago...I've heard his name somewhere else...maybe makes go-karts or F Vees... Two people to ask: Mark Jones and Chris Donnelly, they'd know |

I believe Peter Verheyen is still involved in F Ford as he prepares engines and cars for a few blokes..carnt remember who.it may even be Luke youlden's car..but he is still around the series...the other guys I havent a clue about in fact a few I never even heard of ...allthough the first one may be racing HQ's but this could be another Richard night and not the one you have mentioned.

Don't forget Russell Ingall won te British FFord title too. The only reason I mention that is James Courtney has just done the same trick, becoming the third Australian to do so (the first being Tim Schenken).

Peter Verheyen, like Troy Dunstan, is in the engine and vehicle preparation game these days. Heck, Dunstan was when he was driving the FFords. Both have worked for V8Supercar teams in recent times.
IIRC Paul Bernasconi did some work with Alfa but was into the media stuff. Ron Barnacle co-drove with Tim Rowse at Bathurst last year, but is largely in racing retirment after several strong seasons in Formula Holden in recent times. He's also a writer in South Asutralia. Richard Knight went to the US and tested a black Pontiac Trans-am that could talk and went on a series of crime fighting adventures... or was that Michael Knight? or wasn't Michael Knight the SOCOG guy???? Co-incidentally last years Bathurst set a ecord for the number of ex-FFord champions on the starting grid. Steven Richards won the race of course in #7, Craig Lowndes and Cameron McConville shared second in car #1, Larry Perkins and Russell Ingall shared 7th in car #11, Greg Ritter took 9th in car #35. Mark Larkham took pole position with that scintallating top ten lap in car #10 but DNF'ed on sunday, as did Adam Macrow in #25, Jason Bright in car #4, Tomas Mezera in car #32, Garth Tander in car #34 and Ron Barnacle in car #81 a total of 12 former FFord Champions. Outstanding. |
