Swedish Brick has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
Highlands First race meeting

8/9/10 November 2013:

Australian GT Series - Final Championship Round
South Island Endurance Racing Championship - Final Round
Toyota 86 - First Round
"All in" Highlands 600 endurance race

This will be a fantastic event! Who is going? I got in early and sorted my accommodation as there isn't much in Cromwell!

OZ GT in NZ is pretty damn cool. I have to confess sports car racing the racing I prefer over all others

Highlands 600 sounds cool, OZ GT and SI Enduro cars, does anyone know if they will also be letting other entries in? Might it be GT and SI cars get first dibs then others?

Will be cool to see the Toyotas, but they maybe a little tardy around there! Good thing they look good

I'm rather excited.

The circuit name is Highlands Motorsport Park, no mention of "downs"

Not long now! Going to be an amazing weekend. Interestingly they are saying the 101 will have a Le Mans style start.

Great to see happen. I remember when this was just land and a dream and now it's a great facility and track New Zealand can be proud of.

Also to add to SM post, Cromwell may be booked out Motel wise but there are some good deals to be had in Queenstown and Alexandra. Personally I would rather stay in Alex as I don't really like Q/Town but that's just personal choice. Alex is what, about 20 mins from Cromwell?

Wanaka is not that far away either if your really committed.

EVERYONE in the area is talking about this event by the way, so make up your minds fast if you want to head down and not have to sleep in the side drains

This is an occasion, everyone is going to be there so share the enjoyment of the days rather than the disappointment of for the rest of your life saying "I wish I had been there" every time someone talks about it.

There is accommodation still available in Clyde and don't forget the country pubs that saturate Central Otago like St Bathans, Becks, Lauder, Omakau, Bannochburn , Luggate etc. You will have a magic time

Great complex, but can anyone tell me what it is really like as a paying spectator? Particularly one who likes to take photographs and who doesn't have a media pass (or a 1000mm lens)?

It appears to me not only from pics, in car video and even talking to one of the original developers at length, that for much of the time, cars are out of sight and that photo opportunities are somewhat scarce. A driver's track - which is great - but that doesn't always equate to a spectator's track.

Bearing in mind that from the outset (ie Pre Quinn) this was being set up as a high class country club/resort for people with cars who'd like to play now and again and I don't think that spectators were too high on the initial priority list. More than happy to be proved wrong.

Do they mean the running across the track and getting in the car type thing?

If so, then you would hope it wouldn't be the actual race start

Intriguing I must say. Funny if they do actually go with the traditional version which I believe did involve drivers running to their cars to kick off the race.
