Sounds like most rally Mk2 Escorts and people are still in love with those, and they perform well.

The difference between them and Mog set up is link length! Longer the better, and latter are very short.....

Bob, I was only thinking of 4 wheelers- but thank you. The modern trike uses some strange US made V twin?

Anyway what's wrong with a Mazda ? My MX5 is brilliant ! They looked at the Elan and decided to make a car without the Lotus shortcomings. It starts first time in all weathers it doesn't leak oil it does good MPG it doesn't rattle the rag top doesn't leak it's cheap to run the headlamps stay up or down the electrics never go wrong it goes and handles as well as a std Elan_____ I could fill a page ! OK it's not got a ridiculous value but it only costs me £400 and I am not frightened to leave it parked anywhere !

Spot on, Gordon. I had an early one, UK not import, and it was a great little car. Now a classic in waiting!

The gearbox is finding favour for conversions as well. You can even get a kit to swap an MGB over to the Mazda box....

And a BBR turbo version will really perform, too. Whilst an ITB equipped version has been very competitive in CSCC races in the recent past.

I understand the suspension can be a bit tricky to set up on Mk1s but the Mk3 is both practical an a cheap(ish) race car option.

Say what you like about them, they are still a JAP car, but you have to have to have lived through a war to understand.

I had a customer (RIP) that refused to buy a Jap 4x4 for that very reason, he stuck with Range Rovers and as he was a farmer he actually used it for everything like towing trailer loads of logs out of his wood/carting dead and live animals about and certainly wasn't a "Chelsea Tractor" it cost him a fortune in repairs. His mates on the other hand had old Toyota Land cruisers that put up with anything that could be thrown at them and never seemed to break down !

Sadly Gordon a lot of Range Rover owners think that "driving off road" refers to when they park outside Waitrose with two wheels up on the pavement..

There's nothing "strange" about S&S Motors. The 1983 cc V Twin has been detuned to 82 hp, for Morgan. S&S currently sets the standard for V Twin design and performance. Would Morgan have used them if there was a current British design that was superior?

Welcome, owrforever.

I doubt many in the UK know anything about S&S, me included, so from that point of view, the engine is 'strange'! Certainly seems to get good reviews, and of all the problems the 3 wheeler has suffered, none I've heard about were directly related to the engine. For those over here as ignorant as myself, a link to S&S (hoping the same people)- https://www.sscycle.com

Coincidentally, while thinking about the 3 wheeler, it also uses the Mazda gearbox discussed a few posts above....

S & S

In addition to their website there are a couple of factory tours on Youtube that are very informative. When one thinks of leading edge performance you think of southern California, Indianapolis, or Charlotte, not Viola, Wisconsin (population 688). It fits the definition of the cottage racing industry you have in the UK. It's more difficult to earn "street cred" when you say your HQ is located in Viola, but they let Bonneville do their talking, and are highly respected in Harley World. It's just a curious disconnect to see this product being produced on a dairy farm in rural Wisconsin. Another example of an American success story. Morgan obviously conducted their due diligence, and made an excellent choice.

Yop! probably they couldn't find a better engine (apart from Guzzi may be). Its meaty and delivers tons of torque from the low end. And because this kind of choice is show off oriented, this is a master piece of design very pleasant to watch.
And yes, S&S does mean something in Harley world.

Sounds like Morgan chose well!

Here's a 2011 release from S&S about the Morgan and it's 'X-Wedge' engine...

Mike, before it becomes a collector or classic, did you ever ride a Buell? Interesting experience IMHO. And the chassis design is really something too. Probably you're more Bimota oriented…

No, always admired Buell. When I had GSs the dealer was also Harley / Buell so always some to look at. Never tried one though...

Geography lesson for today

The location of the S & S factory outside Viola prompts today's geography lesson. During the last Ice Age, as the giant glaciers receded they left behind morainic deposits that created the topography. The hills surrounding S & S are glacial monadnocks, and their shape reflects the direction the ice cap melted; in S & S's case they run north/south. The valleys between the monadnocks, called peneplains, have extremely rich soil, and are just the right size for farming. Most monadnocks are full of gravel and rock and offer little agricultural value. So when you look at Google maps the satellite image is a classic textbook example of monadnocks. Thus ends our lesson for today.

Jeez, that's quite a hike! Good luck for the weekend and the return trip, stay safe. I did a return trip from Sussex to my son's place outside Perth in Scotland 2 weeks ago - 540miles and 7.5 hours driving both ways, did 5 days work in between, felt shattered for several days after! Must be my age
