Aero-kits

There is growing disquiet over aero-kits since their inception last year at St. Petes. A number of drivers say the racing is worse. Many teams are unhappy with the extra cost and there is a clear disparity between Chevrolet's and Honda's aero-kits, with Chevrolet's being vastly superior. There is also the safety aspect. After last year's 500, teams are now having to use domed-skids on the car's undertray, to prevent airborne accidents, like we saw last year. However, the already struggling Honda teams say this will make their cars even less competitive.

Now IndyCar have just announced that next season could see the use of a standard aero-kit, something Chevrolet are unhappy with.

http://classic.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/123874

So it looks like the aero-kit venture could go full circle.

Doesn't matter how they try to dress it, DW12 is above all else, a pig.
Drop it, sooner rather then later.
There have been much friendlier looking race cars evolved since in 'junior' formulas, that look good and perform.

Apart from its aesthetics, or lack of them, the DW12 has not been without its problems, since its inception. The biggest was weight distribution, with it being very tail heavy. The initial solution was to stick 26 pounds of lead ballast in the nose of the car. Since then changes in the suspension have been implemented.

In 2018 a new formula and new car and was supposed to be introduced but that isn't going to happen, as design and manufacture was meant to take place in January this year.

Yes, there you have it but it isn't going to happen.
Teams crying poor so the pig lives on while they fluff around trying to make it what it isn't.

I really liked the Lola concept that was a rival proposal to the Dallara, Deltawing and Swift concepts.
IIRC they were going to offer multiple options for aero kits, and the bit that I really liked was the idea to use the same basic tub for use in both Indycar and Indy lights.

IMO Lola's was the best concept by far. It did offer a universal tub for IndyCar and Indy Lights and the different aero-kits/body work was primarily designed to give the car visual variety. I really think the IRL did themselves no favours not going with Lola's concept.

There's an interesting article about it here along with the other rival proposals.

Shows a total lack of understanding of Indycar. How much have you watched on the series since 2012?

The DW12 despite its critics has been racy and allowed for great on track racing. Would you take a good looking car for rubbish racing?

Plus one here!

The DW12 despite its critics is a good race car!
Better without the aero kit too!

The Lola proposal looks very good.

Were Lola dropped because of the IndyCar owners unhappiness with their price gouging when they were previously supplying the cars?

So do you acknowledge of how much of a good race car its been? Indycar as an on track product has been the strength since the DW12

Lola supplied cars to CART and Champ Car, not to the IRL, so I wouldn't have thought that had anything to do with it.

Back in 2010, when the ICONIC committee were deliberating about which bid to accept, the rumour going round was the IRL were always going to give it to Dallara.

Not sure where my post said you acknowledged that - it was merely a question based on common opinion about the success of the DW12 as a race car.

If people want to only watch Motorsport for aesthetics that up to them

No problems - it happens.

Anyways moving on - a move back to the original DW12 aero seems a legitimate possibility for 2017 given its success from 2012 - 2014.

The issue of the cars being visually different still stands though.
