Old or new - whatever your criteria- is it Ford or Vauxhall?

What a terrible thought. It's like "If you were the only girl in the world, and I were the only boy" - what sort of choice is that? Still, if that's all we can choose between, the bus is looking more appealing than I ever imagined!

Agree with Woolley, I'd probably take the train or bus.

If we are talking about a taxi, then a big Ford Falcon is bigger than anything Vauxhall make, so I guess it would be the Ford. If it was a company car and someone else was paying, I'm not sure if I'd care either way.

The phrase 'scraping the barrel' comes to mind. If I had to pick, it'd be Ford because of their better international motorsport history and my opinion that their current range is SLIGHTLY more interesting than Vauxhall's. Oh, and they've done a good job with Astons....

It's Ford that have the far stronger motorsport history and commitment today with Cosworth, Jaguar etc. Mondeo and Focus are great IMHO. No contest.

Tricky one. I've had two Novas (they were cheap) and they were quite good fun in a sad sort of way. The demise of the first one wasn't much fun though.

I've never driven a ford I've liked (fiesta, escort (hatch and estate), focus (hatch and estate), mondeo (saloon and estate). The fiesta was particularly dire (my head touched the ceiling, the seat wouldn't go back far enough and the steering wheel was resting on my legs, it was totally gutless too. I'll not slate ford too much though, after all they did make the RS200 and I am co-driving a mk2 Escort.

Actually on second thoughts Ford deserve a kicking - Ka and Fusion (the fiesta on stilts), I think that says it all really.

Definitely Ford - we've got a new Mondeo Estate (V6 of couse)

and we're mightily impressed - bought it as a tow car for the race car (Mk1 Cortina of course) and it handles superb with plenty of grnut and is a pleasure around town and on the motorway...

I'll forget to mention that I once owned a Vectra though

Astra or Focus: Opel Astra.
Corsa or Fiesta: Definitely Ford Fiesta.
Vectra or Mondeo: Ford Mondeo, but I like the Opel Vectra too.
Nova or Escort: I'm sorry, I've never had a drive in a Nova.

Reliability is suspect on Focuses (Foci???), I drove one that refused to go into 3rd gear (5000 miles on the clock) and one that decided to blow its ABS unit (whilst coming off the motorway onto the sliproad - not a good moment). That one had 3500 miles on it at the time, the same car now has 8000 miles on it and the gearbox is whining badly and it corners like an oil tanker.

Fix Or Repair Daily - seems to be appropriate.

Neither. Rover or MG for me please. And by the way, has anyone tried to sit in (let alone drive) the new Fiesta? Can you offer advice on where I should put my left foot? It won't fit under the clutch pedal, and a plastic moulding prevents me from putting it where sensible cars have foot rests. That's if I could remain seated, of course - under-thigh support is non-existent.

I have never driven a Vauxhall, which is a bit odd. However I have driven quite a few normal Fords. Fiesta was OK. The new Mondeo was quite good. The automatic older shape Mondeo didn't impress me. The Focus was very nice, although I borrowed a deisel one and was surprised that the rev counter was the same as the petrol version! I owned a bog standard Escort for a couple of years and thought it was a good car. Not very quick, but decent enough handling (if very understeery).

What have GM ever done in motorsport? I'll let our US and Aussie friends fill you in.

For me, they need do nothing else other than the simply glorious Corvette C5R GTS.

I used to prefer Fords in the early 80s - RS 1600i, Sierra Cossie etc, but then converted to Vauxhalls once I could drive - funnily enough I've owned 3 or 4 Vauxhalls over the years but never a Ford. Oh, except one - and that was a van.

I'm not a fan of any of the current Vauxhall or Ford ranges, except my parents chose an Astra over a Focus for practical reasons such as rear legroom, and if I was forced to choose between a Mondeo and a Vectra, I'd probably go Mondeo - but only if I could have the ST220

Hypothetical really - I doubt I'll ever be in the market for a Ford or a GM while I have the choice of superior Japanese and German (and one day. please God, British and Italian) alternatives.

Garcon . . . .theres a huge difference between Vauxhaul and GM . . . .likewise Ford US and Ford Dagenham, until recent years.

vauxhaul as a concern in Luton dont really come on the scale as Ford in Dagenham, Im not aware Vauxhaul ever had an AVO site?

I guess it depends whether your comparing like for like or not

of modern cars . . .Mondeo over Vectra, for every reason

Focus and Astra are both resonably good capable economic cars, I dont see vauxhaul with an RS type variant

Ive never drivan a Fiesta, so dont know if its better/worse than a Corsa

think 60's and 70's though . . . Cortina and Escort vs Viva . . . . . .although a droop snoot firenza might give an RS a run for its money

I loved the early 90s Mondeos/Contours. They were sweet. Looked nice and drove nice. The backseat wasn't the largest, but they were okay. The Focus is a competent car. I hear Euro Foci quality is better than it's US twin. The look is top heavy. Too high of a greenhouse in order to create headroom. Doesn't look natural.

I hear the Vectra is competent, though quality could be debateable? We got a XL version of the Vectra in '00 over here in NA. Sold as a Saturn LS. The car did miserable sales wise. It was refreshened in '02, but it looked even uglier afterwards!

ford

astra v focus, astra but i have one now. its well built and quite nippy for an 1.6, never driven a focus though but i prfer the shape of the astra.

mondeo v vectra, mondeo, i had an old mondeo and i never like the vectra, i would rather have the new mondeo than the new vectra too.

corsa v fiesta, fiesta.

i would like a new vauxhall omega though, my mates dad had one, it was packed to the brim with fancy gizmos.

Wouldn't touch a GM and only the Focus is at all interesting from Ford.
