James Hunt

Did James Hunt do any driving outside of his Formula 1 commitments?
Did he ever do Can-Am, or any other racing in the USA?

I don't think he raced in US, unless on his way to F1, but he did compete in the UK (Avon or Texaco sponsored) 'Tour of Britain' at least twice in Camaro and Vauxhall Magnum while an F1 driver, winning it in 1973, I think?

Thanks for that info, Mike.

I know he came and raced a one off event in Australia-The Rose City 10000 at Winton in Victoria.

Perhaps he was too busy going to church on Sunday, to indulge in extra racing.

He raced at Trois Rivieres (Canada ) in F Atlantic in '76, He came back with a mission for McLaren to get Gilles Villeneuve signed up - and of course the debuted him in '77 at Silverstone and let him go to Ferrari ...

He would also turn up at races using an assumed name (alias) and just go out for fun. I came up against him a couple of times, doing just that, racing friends' minis.

Hunt did do a round of the IROC series in 1976. Although he qualified fastest, he never got to grips with drafting and crashed on his own at the back

The only link I can see between Hunt and the UOP Shadow is a one-off 'F1 vs CanAm' race that took place at Luguna Seca, I think in 1974? James and JP Jarier were in single seaters, Oliver and Follmer in the CanAm cars.

Edit- according to 'Racing Sports Cars' website he was on the entry list to drive a DN2 a couple of times in 1973 but didn't. It also shows him co-driving a Gulf Mirage at Kyalami in the 1973 9hr race, finishing 2nd.
