If you look at various touring car series around the world, it is quite easy to have a set of regulations and tracks that enable passing. WTCC for reasons best known to themselves choose some abysmal street tracks where overtaking is impossible. The sensible decision would of be to move away from these dire tracks instead of adding these unnecessary and weird solutions.

I really do detest the while joker lap theory and for me it has already wrecked Rallycross, a sport I've loved since I can remember. Do people not realise that one if the main criteria to be a good touring car driver is the ability to overtake! It just dilutes what is potentially going to be a good race because a driver can just bide their time and wait for a joker lap. The best races usually in touring cars when a slower driver is in front with a train if quicker cars behind. Awful, awful idea! As has been said, countless national series seem to have plenty of overtaking choosing from a much more narrow pool of circuits. I guess they aren't run by the FIA though.

With the races being so short in rallycross and tracks not being as wide as in racing, the joker makes it more challenging for the drivers and more interesting watch. Doing an overtake is very hard otherwise and there tends almost always to be contact of some sort, many times resulting in pushing and bad driving. In the end a race can unfortunately be decided by the judges.

I don't see why it would be needed in WTCC though, both because of the reasons I have wrote and the reasons you have wrote. It could be interesting maybe, but overtaking is and should be a part of racing I think.

Once you start dreaming up things like this, all is lost. Touring car racing should stand up on it's on two feet as racing, it already has enough 'gmmicks' - success ballast and semi-reverse grids.

Several circuit racing championships have joker laps, they just call them pitstops.

Is there any driver confirmed for season 2017? Heads up, François. There’s a cannonball coming your way.

Maybe Monteiro and Michelisz, but I didn't read anything yet.

Chilton is to race in the BTCC. No WTCC date clashes as far as I can tell. A double programme or gone from the WTCC? http://www.btcc.net/2016/12/19/tom-c...btcc-with-pmr/

Indeed.

'Just to be clear...Tom Chilton isn't leaving the #WTCC. There are no clashes next year, he can, and plans, to do both #BTCC' https://twitter.com/neilhudson/statu...86396835692544

Portion of some interesting rumours:

http://hosszabbitas.hu/wtcc/huff-es-...sburg-volvoban

Huff may move to Munnich with Citroen while Filippi may join SLR. Catsburg is one of candidates to drive for Volvo. If this happens, it seems Huff will have the best chance to grab the title a.k.a. Muller in 2013.

It's late December and we still haven't got a single driver confirmed! It seems much is going behind the scenes right now.

Catsburg @ Volvo? Sorry Tom, for the first time in WTCC's history I'll be rooting for another driver!

After Losail I read that Filippi could have stopped with races... He doesn't bring so much money, I think it's unlikely to see him in a privateer team.

And then Volvo may have a monstrous line-up - Bjork, Girolami, Catsburg. Honda will have a tough task on their hands, especially if they lose Huff. I just don't see a good replacement driver, well Tarquini, only, maybe.

Can't WTCC teams fish drivers out of the aquarium? Just as every summer ends, all tourists come home. All dreamers wake up. And new problems are born. And Tarquini still there!

Rumor says that Hans-Werner Aufrecht could join forces with FIA World Touring Car Championship for a potential Class-1 adaption in 2018/19.
