And don't worry too much about it, I had to eat, and wanted to go swimming a few times during the week. And as it happens, Alençon has a decent swimming pool and more than decent places to eat |

Apologies for being late posting in this thread. It's been a complicated week with various ups and downs but it now looks like a corner has been turned and I should be being transferred back to the UK this week.
After the accident on Sunday and initial treatment at Alencon I was transferred to the specialist neurological unit at Caen, where they treated me for a spinal injury. Throughout I was superbly looked after by the team there and on Friday night they operated on me to repair my back and critically ensure I continued to have use of my legs. Since then I've been (relatively speaking) up and about and it looks like I should be headed back to the UK this week. Throughout this whole process I've been blown away by the level of support I've received from all sorts of communities, not least the incredibly kind words from this thread. There have a been a few times when my head went down, and knowing how many people were rooting for me really helped pull through. Can't understate how important it's been, and how much it will continue to be in the long road ahead. Some individuals have really gone above and beyond in helping me. You know who you are, and I look forward to repaying your kindness in person as soon as I can. To everyone else, have a great Le Mans, I'll be there in spirit and hopefully be back in 2018. Well Helen managed to get me an appointment with my back surgeon(yes i have my own one due to prolapsed disc many years ago) will see what he says about travelling down tomorrow, hope he remembers the scene from monty python, is but a slight flesh wound, rips the plastic shell off and tells me to stop being a whimp and get on with my life. But if he says no then it is all over for this year.

This. Never met either of you guys but glad to hear you're on the mend especially with a spinal injury. Hope you both make a full recovery so you can enjoy Le Mans again next year for many years to come. |

Pleased to hear from both of you that things are (slowly) on the up. I know they say on tickets that motor racing can be dangerous, but I didn't realise they meant on the journey home...

Great to hear from you both, and particularly from you Ian as with the op you've had we were all obviously concerned for you. Hopefully you'll be back home soon and on the mend.

Update
managed to see my back surgeon this afternoon, he laugh at seeing me after 9 years and looked at the xray's etc, told me to take the silly brace off, made me do various bending and twisting and said i was very lucky, asked what happened and he again said i was very lucky as impact must have been hard to do that to my vertebrae, i asked whether i could go back to le mans tomorrow and he said certainly not as the chance of another prank could do more damage, Helen explained i was not actually racing there just watching/camping, he then said of course as long as i took care and took it easy. So leaving in morning, will thank all of you for your support in person, so please call into Tertre Rouge and say hello |

I've never met either of you and have never been to the race. But I am delighted to hear that both of you are on the road to recovery.
I have lived a lifetime with back and spinal problems due to childhood polio -- 62 years ago. Despite this, I've managed to attend many sports car race meetings around the U.S. There's nothing like a passionate sporting interest to get you moving again after a physical setback. I'll probably never get to Le Mans, but I am there in spirit every year, and I hope you'll both be able to attend the 24H for many years to come! - Jeff |
