What's Nigel Mansell upto these days?

I remember he did a brief drive at Silverstone afew years back in his old Lotus, but I have not heard of him since.

Do you think he will ever be tempted back into a race car, perhaps for a Goodwood event???

I doubt it. He was frightened off at Donington in the Mondeo. Spends most of his time playing golf these days I think

He had fun at Rockingham a year or so ago.

Golf? A waste of a good walk in the country or so I'm told.

BugEyed should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid

Having been at Donington, I suspect that Nigel Mansell won't want to be on the same circuit as Tiff Needell again.

I am not sure what the real thrust behind the question was. But if it was which former F1 drivers we'd like to see in historic racing, can I vote for Keke Rosburg? His driving style and political incorrectness suit him to the '60's Sports Cars. Anyone got a Cobra for him at the Goodwood Revival?

Well, he is my childhood hero and I'd love to see him race again. But yes, we could expand the question to

"what drivers would you want to see in historic raicing"
and I would include:

Lauda,
Stewart
Mansell,
Gerry Marshall
Jacque Vielleneuve (sp?)

He was in NZ a couple of months ago (minus his famous moustache) on a cycling tour with his wife. I hope he liked NZ.

Can't say i am his greatest fan. Brave, determined balls out racing but there was just something not right for me. To money orientated. Give me the late James Hunt anytime.
Who would I like to see in historics? Frankly if any of the recent batch turned up for the sake of the sport rather than their bank balance I would be supprised.
Hans Stuck has to be worth the gate money what ever he drove. Apart from him I am struggling to think of a driver who could throw a historic car around
Keke Rosberg was mentioned and have to agree he would be spectacular.

Keke Rosberg at Silverstone in '85 when he did his 160mph lap, the timing wasn't so instaneous in those days, but all the teams crews came out into the pit lane and clapped him in. Fantastic.

I think Mansell's lap putting him on pole for the British GP was pretty special - I was there and I recall him getting a standing ovation on his slowdown lap from everyone there even before pole was confirmed!

Get yourselves to the Goodwood Revival.
Over the years we've seen Moss, Brabham, Surtees, Herbert, Brundle, Berger, Tambay, Oliver, Phil Hill and Damon Hill. (Probably forgotten some others too) - as well as the irrepressible Gerry Marshall.
Sadly you will not see the crowd's favourite - Barry Sheene, but Giacomo Agostini, Phil Read and Sammy Miller spring to mind on the bikes.
This is not Gentlemanly racing, the guys are as competitive as ever.
Be there!

After a quick search I found out that Nigel Mansell organizes his own golf tournament as European Seniors Tour round over his own golf course at Woodbury since last year.

In 2003, it took place from August 22 to 24 and Mansell himself was overall 60-th.

This year Nigel Mansell Sunseeker International Classic is scheduled from 9 to 11 of July.

We can make Mansell's golf tournaments list and here is the brief one for the beginning:

11.06.99 - Jersey Seniors Open
18-21.10.01 - Dunhill Links Championship
8.09.02 - Howard Keel Classic
22-24.08.03 - Nigel Mansell Classic
21.11.03 - European Seniors golf tour qualifying school
4.07.04 - Ryder Cup Wales Open

***

Here's short article on Mansell's New Zealand visit earlier this year:

Ex Formula One Champion gives Huka Jet a Whirl

11th February 2004

Spotted on the 11th of February at Huka Jet was the ex Formula One World Champion, Nigel Mansell. Coincidently Nigel was seen only days after an advert appeared looking for a new jet boat driver at Huka Jet. He was given the opportunity to test his ability and see if his jet boat driving skills were as good as his Formula One motor racing skills.

Nigel Mansell was the Formula One world champion in 1992 and in that year he broke the record for most wins in a season with nine. He was the most popular driver on the international Formula One circuit. Nigel spent a bit of time at Huka Jet chatting to staff and was happy to sign autographs. He was rapt that he was given the opportunity to drive a Huka Jet boat and said the trip was one of the best he had experienced.

Nigel enjoyed his time in New Zealand and was seeing as much of the country as he could on a bicycle, which he said helped him to keep fit. He also played as many rounds of golf as time permitted while in New Zealand.

***

In 2003, Nigel Mansell appeared in some F1 news.

April 23, headlines:
Mansell Injured in Confrontation with Intruders
Mansell injured at home
Mansell scuffles with intruders

July 7, headlines:
Hill, Mansell urged to back British GP
Mansell, Hill Urged to Support British GP

July 9, headlines:
Hill and Mansell answer criticisms
Hill, Mansell Respond to Brundle Criticism

***

I noted Nigel Mansell's appearences at the following F1 races: 2002 Monaco and Belgian, 2001 British and Belgian Grands Prix, 2001 Donington 2-seater race.

***

Also I remember reading article in Times newspaper in early 90-s on Nigel Mansell's racing school.
