Tyres.......

Thanks to the people who, a few months ago advised me to go from my normal Goodyear nct3 tyres to the directional Avons AZ1. They are the dogs in the wet, grip is really good.Hit a fairly sharp bend at over a ton yesterday, and they responded well, no understeer at all.Do fill me with confidence.......

All our cars have Avons - ZV1s and ZZ1s, and we can't fault them. Superb grip in the wet and in the dry, fantastic cornering, and they just don't wear down!

Mine are Continental Sport and they are terrible!
My car feels like its on ice when going round a bend in the wet. I think these cost £50 + vat, depending where I get them from.
Used to have Yokahama A520's which were good but I was getting through them too quickly.

My tyres are ok (goodyears)but I think my wheel bearings in the back left has gone (loads of tyre noise at anything over 30)probably because of the donington gravel being to tempting. Its like driving a hippo on ice skates.
If anyone thinks it might be something else and not the bearings let me know before I start taking it appart.

Prob should have read Zv1 as Maisie Said. Even under the hardest acceleration in the wet, yeah, ok the front wonders very slightly, but no slip as there was before....Thanks again to the person who mentioned these tyres.

Michelin Sport Primacy - grip is ok but, typical Michelin, they let go with very little warning. They also cost a bundle. I'm currently debating whether to switch my tyres front to rear, replace the fronts with new Michelins or replace all 4 with something like a Yokohama A539.

The Merc has some fairly low profile Pirelli's as standard, and they are brilliant in the wet, and grip very well. But they would be as expensive as all buggery to replace. Had two punctures in a couple of years, but thankfully they were able to be patched up.

I have Yokohama A539s on my Ford Falcon and I think they're very good. Excellent grip in the dry and wet, very quite and i get 40 000km out of a set, not bad for a company car with half a dozen drivers, all younger and keener than me.

I put A539s on the front of my SSS when the old tyres went west very very quickly. The A539s were in better condition after about 8000km than the original Dunlops after 1000km.

I run Pirelli P-Zeros on my Alfa. Nice and grippy in the wet.

Anyone have any opinion on Marangoni tyres? They were suggested by a tyre dealership (as a very good tyre) but I've never heard of them. A bit expensive but I'm interested to hear about them.

A bit off topic but -

On motorcycles - I have always loved Avons (great on Harleys) real wet wheather tyres. Don't like the Michelins on the Ducati at all. No feel, very unresponsive.

For passenger cars - loved the Yokohamas on the Ford. 225/60 series and good compromise between grip in the wet/lomg life/low road noise.

MFan, start saving up for some of those tasty wheels you can get to fit Min-Mins, and stay away from kerbs, eh?

Yeah, I've learnt my lesson 'bout Minis and kerbs. Kimi isn't a fan of them...

Okay, a question for you all. My dad has Michelins on his Cavalier. A couple of times now, he's found that when he's put full lock on the car when turning / parking the wall of the tyre seems to have folded in on itself. Anyone else ever encountered this?

Underinflated at all? Sounds like the sidewalls are too soft.

Oh, Rick, I meant to post that when the Avons are new, they do tend to bump steer and tramline, but I've found that once they've worn in it gets a lot better.

Nope, all inflated correctly. It's got my dad completely stumped as to why it happens on this car (which he's owned for about 3 1/2 years now) when he's never encountered this with any other car.

Carrie, are the tyres the correct width for the rims ?
Maisie, yeah maybe felt a little of wandering, but was under hard accel, going up a small hill, and with cold rubber.Took a good look at the edges yesterday when the car received its first clean of the year, they are looking very good.

I think mine still have the little fringey rubbery bits on the edge, and I've had them for about a year! Maybe I should corner harder?
