It'd be amusing if Williams then won with Massa next year.

I'm now hearing Williams will release Bottas if they find a suitable replacement. Also, Mercedes will not announce their new driver until the new year. This will give everyone time to sort out whatever needs sorting out. Like I said before, Bottas must be feeling anxious! Especially when he could be the new world champion of 2017. Oh ya, that can't happen....my apologies. Kimi will be champ.

One of the Joe Saward articles suggested that Mr Lowe actually still has a year to go on his contract at Mercedes. It wasn't clear if this was the standard contract terms, or an option to be exercised by either/both or not.

Having consistently banged the drum for Wehrlein, I must now confess it looks like Bottas might get into the seat after all. Crushing blow for Wehrlein if so - Bottas will be signed on a long-term deal, no doubt, and I see no sign of Hamilton going anywhere soon.

I've heard people say Button be a better bet for Williams, should Bottas go to Merc. Personally I don't understand. Button just seems to be happy to get out of it, wheareas I think Massa has only retired because there was no seat he wanted

Massa did a Michael (1st time around.) Honorable thing, maybe the time is right, but was pushed somewhat.
I think Button would be better, particularly for driver development of Stroll but his mind set is the key factor, and I think he's happy to leave the disaster zone. (But Williams *should* be better than McLaren over a season maybe....) |

If you are going to start that: Post Ref. 369348 4/12 Still think that Massa would be Merc's best option, they would get commitment from Massa. Massa is cheaper than Bottas and imo his equal, so why bother getting Bottas for a whole lot more money. (p.s. As stated before, Bottas' car was developmentally ahead of Massa's this year, so the results are not achieved in equal equipment.) Button is done, his heart would not be in it. Put it this way: Massa seemed sad to leave, while Button seemed more relieved

Massa 'retired' because his drive was sold elsewhere but Button chose not to pursue offers.

Massa wouldn't make much sense for Mercedes. They'd only get one or two years out of him, then what? If Wehrlein isn't ready now, I really don't think he'll be ready in 2018. You've got it or you haven't.

Unless you are just filling in time waiting for Vettel, Alonso, Ricciardo or Verstappen to become available, all of whom I'd expect to comfortably outperform Bottas.

Alonso will be pushing 37 by the time he's out of contract with McLaren. I think his time has passed.

Massa is effectively a free agent, meaning if he went to Mercedes there would be no benefits given to Williams for releasing him.
Bottas would be a better fit at Mercedes, he is younger than Massa, his commitment to F1 is in no doubt, as opposed to Massa, and he could be signed on a longer term contract than Massa. Hamilton's contract is up at the end of 2017, I cannot see Vettel going to Mercedes to have equal status should Hamilton stay on for 2018. If Mercedes signed Massa for 1 year, then in 2018 Toto Wolff could be looking for 2 drivers. Sign Bottas for a 2 year contract, then if Hamilton leaves at the end of 2017 to be replaced by Vettel you still have some continuity. Williams would release Bottas, get cheaper/free Mercedes engines in return and then hire Massa for 1 year to teach Lance Stroll the ropes, giving Williams continuity from the 2016 season and an experienced team mate as dictated by the Stroll deal. |
