hey you're still alive aren't you! It is true though, we have had some fun with the UK marshals when they come over due to the difference in duties.

My favourite bit is when they're handed a radio due to their senior grade and get this horrified look on their face when they find out they're actually expected to get off the bank!

This is particularly amusing for the ones who have shiny new never been smudged overalls

I was recently coerced into flagging at a meeting at Anglesey. At lunch time the flaggie on the previous post commented that he was having difficulty seeing my yellows because of the state of the flag, faded & grubby. As he was using his own flags, he suggested that I use the spare yellow flag from his post. On my way back on post after lunch, I picked up the spare flag, but when I compared it to the one I'd been using it was even worse, so I carried on using the flag I'd used in the morning.

A week later I saw the aforementioned flaggie, who commented that my yellows were much easier to see after I'd changed flags......

A new young doctor at (name of circuit omitted to spare Andy's embarrassment!) went to a fallen rider. Going through the usual routine questions, he was getting no reponse from the rider, who was obviously conscious, so he radioed in that he had a problem as the rider didn't understand English. Help arrived, the rider's helmet & earplugs were removed & somebody, speaking slowly, asked him if he understood English; back came the reply 'of course I do - I was just winded!'

Unconcious driver, well no sign of brain activity if thats any guide.
Check your A B C. Thats A for Airway, B for breathing and C for circulation.
Rescue unit arrive, tell them I have checked the ABC but the driver is unconcious.
They rechecked ABC their way.
That's A for Access, B for Barclay Card and C for Cash.
They use a most interesting part of the anatomy to check a lady's pulse.

As usual it was raining at croft. It was raining so hard the race was red flagged. As the red was picked up a dutch BMW stopped at my girlfiends post...having first tried to drive through it. My girlfriend and her colleague attend with their usual swift pace having first cried out oh my god they have hit my post again.(In her first 8 meets as a marshal she has had the rescue unit 4 times and her post struck 5 times....Jonah may be an appropriate word)

The driver is soon rescued with the words "Are you ok?" and her colleague "is the elctrics off?"..the car was still running at the time but did have the handbrake. So they retire to the safety of the post driver limping...."Are you sure you are ok? your limping!"
"da I always walk like dis"...My dutch accent doesn't come across when I type...

By which time the observer has called the rescue unit....
Those fearless devils came screaming around the circuit, yanked open the side door and bodily grab the driver....
he started to protest " I always walk like dis, I stay with the car...I am ok"...

for always walking like dis...he got a free trip to the medical centre in a rush...(FIB body snatch style)

and to top it all, the next day she still asked the rescue unit chief..."Can I join the unit next year?" even after asking "so how is the driver who always walks like dat?"

The stories here have amused me, but this one really made me laugh, as I have in the past (in TimD's words) taken a cropper or two off my bike during a race meeting and have been once good and winded.

Brands Hatch, 750MC meeting and I'm at post 5. It's qualifying for the Stock Hatches and we get an Escort pull up with an engine fire. We go out and put out the fire, no problem. Then through the cloud of smoke and powder another car pulls up. I run down and ask the driver what's the problem. He replies, "I've just been black flagged and I saw you out here. Could you tell me how to get to the pits?"

Saturday, MRO at Oulton Park, several bikes were involved in an incident. One of the riders, who was unhurt, but whose bike was unrideable, climbed over the fencing into the infield where he was met by one of his team who took him back to the paddock to get his spare bike.

The sector marshal whose post the incident had occurred naturally radioed this in; on (mis)hearing the radio, a look of shock & horror came across the face of one of my fellow marshals, doing his first day's marshalling - he thought the sector marshal had said that the rider had gone off into a car......he had actually said 'gone off in a car.......

F renault driver who nose-rolled (yes - I didn't know it was possible either!) into the field at croft beyond the gravel-trap at post 8.
He ended upside-down, and I had one of those moments when you think "oh my god - how can he have survived that?" I get there & he has squirmed out of the car, removed his helmet & seems fine...
...he turns to me and says:
"wow - I didn't know I could fly...!"

Driver spun off into gravel trap and got out of his car. Before I gave him a hand up onto the bank, I asked if he had switched off his electrics. He told that he had and explained it by pointing to another post, laughing and saying "I remember you from the last time - over there". Apparently, the last time we met, I had "gently" reprimanded him for not switching the electrics off. If only everyone took such heed of me..

Reminds me of one time at Bathurst. I was told of this by a fellow Marshal. Apparently the field was under SC, and it was plissing down. Anyway from the spray this clown who had obviously suffered brain failure punts another driver heavily into the wall. Both drivers get out, and are kept seperate, for obvious reasons. When asked if they had turned off the Electrics both said yes....However why were the pumps still ticking? Why were the windscreen wipers still moving? And sure enough.... One went whoof.... engine fire. Nice work, guys....

Observed on yesterday's GP coverage (OK I was bored - very bored...), Pedro de la Rosa, pulls the Jag over onto the grass, it starts to smoke and stuff around him so the marhals get him out quick, point him towards the armco, he leaps over the top of it and you see him fall away on the other side of it - turns out the ground slopes really badly on the other side of the armco!! All you see is his helmet disapear from sight!!!

oh yes we saw that too (we being a gang of us).

we kept watching it over and over again on the highlights on Sky digital - and doing voiceovers and sound fx!

Did everyone also see Kimi nearly thumping a marshal?

I wouldn't say thumping, it was more like, "Get off, I can get out and put the steering wheel by myself you bloody git" as the poor fellow tried to take his arm.

As a young man(many-many-many)years ago I was driving a Breakdown truck at Shellsley Walsh, and was stationed in the field to the left side ,at the bottom of the final strait climb to the finish. It was a hot day and at lunch break Myself and my partner lay in the grass neaar the trackside, and promptly fell asleep. We were rudly awoken by a loud bang and looked up to see a lotus 23 lying over us upside down with a wild eyed driver looking at us. Fortunatly only the car suffered any permanent damage. but in 40 years I have never dozed at lunch break since.

So we're standing out on post and the subject gets around to grading.

Wright pulls out his grading card.... "I've done the training days, and now I need ONE MORE incident signature, but I never get any incidents... LIKE THAT ONE!" (Without missing a beat and as a "customer" goes headlong into the bank for a HEAVY impact throwing tyres and car parts everywhere....)

What was really impressive was the way he'd been running his finger along the blank line and then just straight off the card to point to the poor unfortunate who was about to join us.

He got his last signature that day

Why do the most amusing incidents seem to occur in Ireland?
A good night was had by all, but it finished very late.
The following day's lunch break occurred, we got back on post early and there was a delay.

We waited for the European Rally cross cars to emerge.
Remember these are not the detuned ones of today that are only twice as powerful as crasher McRae's Focus type of rally car. Not 300 horse power of rally cars or 650 bhp of today's cars but the really powerful and LOUD monsters of Schanker, Ali Maki, etc.

As in the above story it was warm so we lay down to rest to recover from the previous night. When THOSE cars started we all awoke, except one young lady. Irish Ladies and Flagging - others can comment. The lady was well asleep on the grass. The grass bank was on the apex of the corner above three layers of armco.

She was dreaming, I must be at a rallycross meeting, she felt warm and save. We had her flags in hand awaiting the cars arrival to ensure safety of drivers.

Her face whilst dreaming was a picture. Then the cars came (safely) within one yard of her head on full blast 4 wheel drift. That face should have been on video. The slow realisation as she awoke of several thousand horse power on full song in close proximity was a joy to behold. We were not blessed with her favourable comments as we held her flags behind our backs - no distraction to the drivers, but could she find them as we hid them?

Sadly I cannot guarantee warm weather at Croft on 26/27 October when some European Rallycrossers' are invited to play with the British drivers.

Message on the Donington radio prior to 3 hours of GTs:

"Can you let us know when there's going to be a gap before the race, because those of us on the Melbourne loop will need to go to the toilet because we can't get out during racing."

Reply from Race Control:

"Yes, no problem, but don't all go at once, you'll need to make sure the post is covered. Can you relieve each other?"

The reply was drowned out by the laughter...

Getting a bit worried about this 'Speedtrap Gun Fetish'

If I had known it was that serious, we would have taken a little bit longer to get to Donington on Sunday
