Changes at Donington Park

Managed to remember to take the (new, digital) camera to Donington last weekend. Very few changes, but the most noticeable is that the fence on the left of the Old Hairpin and at the straight on has been moved back between 10 and 20 meters. The gravel trap has also got deeper.

At least one driver was grateful for the change, stopping just short of the new bank.

Other changes

Well the concrete edging strips which were all the way round the track on both sides have gone and the new tarmac surface has been extended to take their place. So the track is about 30cm wider. (I gather that the strips went because they were ridged and the MotoGP people did not like them.)

The curbing at the corners has had the ridges much reduced in height, to about 1.5cm. So for cars, they might as well not be there. Again MotoGP needs.

Some hatch drivers were really taking advantage of this. I never heard what penalties the 750MC were imposing for all four wheels off? The BTCC and any cowboys (sorry, professional drivers) will be in heaven.

The new tarmac surface has added a couple of new places for drivers to go off. In particular the straight after Coppice Lodge corner seems to be catching people out. Mind you the severe wind on Saturday probably did not help.

Has anyone done a comparison of lap times? But I guess that it might be difficult to find times from an equally wet and windy meeting.

Regards

Jim

Jim we did receive reports of four wheels off during last weekend at Donington. These drivers will be observed in future and i am sure would have been spoken too on the day. As would anyone reported for corner cutting.

When viewing the Old Hairpin from a high vantage point (infield banking) the surface looked extremely slippery..I'm sure it was just a trick of the light but it looked almost wet

Funny you should mention that Paul. On the Saturday morning Jonathan Lewis came into the pit lane for a chat and pointed out that although the track was dry if you touched it your hand came away wet. Most odd.

I also heard people saying that it felt spongy to walk on too.
