Some of these experts would never have seen Haberfield Fats drive or Skinny Manton for that matter. So I wonder how they can judge.

As they all are, it's a subjective list. I thought there was a bit too much weighting to modern era drivers, but I can't argue against any individual.
Brock was an obvious #1, Skaife an equally so #2. Beyond that, any of the first 20 could be included in the top 10. |

As soon as i saw the list i lol'd. Seems like any old chum got to decide it. Ambrose in the top 10 was laughable, ahead of whincup whos got more achievements, and earlier in his life than ambrose did.
If the list was serious, there must be a hidden critera that was required, that ambrose has, that no-one else knows about. |

wouldnt that be that he raced in it 5 years, won it twice, was third twice and top ten the other time. Thats a pretty good strike rate.
Much higher than Jamies, which is why i rate him higher than Jamie. But if Jamie wins this year, he moves up above Ambrose |

Pardon my ignorance, but Foges in Auto Fiction made some reference to Big Pete having some less than savoury disgressions in his private life. Does anyone know what he is talking about. It was the reason he placed him so low in his list.

Yes, there was an incident that he went to gaol for.
I won't repeat those here, and I would suggest nor should anyone else. Suffice to say it was extremely serious, one of the worst things a person can do. Only his age and certain other factors saved him from a far lengthier prison term than he got (which I believe was a couple of years). |

I wasn't stirring up anything, I genuinely did not know. Still won't obviously.

I don't know all the details of the case, but I do know what was being referred to. Plus a bit 'speak no ill of the dead'. But take it from me, you're better off now knowing. Just remember a fantastic racing car driver who was one of our greatest ever on the track. |

I beleive this was originally a list of the top 50 drivers to compete in the ATCC (which is still awarded to the V8SC winner as well). If you take into account the times when Bathurst was not a part of the ATCC & some drivers acheivements happening in the ManChamp series & CoMs series, this may explain the disparities in the list.
Interesting that none of Brock's Bathursts were ATCC events, or was any of his Sandown enduro results. |

there are two multi championship winners missing from the top ten
Bob Jane (4 times) and Glenn Seton (2 times) both ended up in the late teens. not sure thats right bob is also a multi Bathurst and its preceding PI winner |

I think it would be interesting to see the list repeated with the number of ATCC Championship & round wins & Bathurst & Sandown wins beside each name.

International racing
I question the greatness of V8 only drivers compared to those who competed internationally.
V8 fans might question why the category is ignored when seats for LeMans etc are being offered. Jane on pole in a works Jag at the British GP in the early 60s. Moff in the TransAm (Lotus Cortina/Mercury Cougar). Firth with Moff in the TransAm (Lotus Cortina). Moff in works BMW, Alan Mann Escort ... Brock in Vauxhall with Gerry Marshall Perkins in a TWR Jag at LeMans, 4th? Gricey in a works HR31 Nissan with Win Percy in Europe. Grice at LeMans, Goss at LeMans Apologies to the likes of Davo/ Stillwell I'm a Lowndes fan, but please! I'm a GT fan, but can he really be ranked against a guy like Jane, raced everything, won lots more than GT. Anti Ambrose rants forget he's out there doing it against the best. Aus champ is a playground compared to the bigger game. Frank Gardner was not the best touring car driver in Aus, but he is the best we have produced. |
