Random Trivia Question

Just out of interest, when did marshals start wearing orange? Anyone know?

I always understood the reason for the orange was that we did not clash with the flags and did not cause too much chaos.

As I remember it would have been some time in the late seventies. Safety concerns had been expressed and the 4 x 2 fire fighting system introduced, people became more concerned with personal safety and the use of proban overalls and balaclavas increased. At first they were not universally orange, my first set were a natty dark blue with light blue racing stripe! Some people got hold of second hand drivers overalls.

I think the first set of orange I saw was a chap who had marshalled at the Monaco grand prix, the organisers gave all the marshals a set. I think orange was settled on to avoid confusion with a) flags and b)drivers.

Orange is also hi-vis and therefore marshals can be easily recognised by a driver needing assistance (i.e. on the grid - ever been on an F1 or BTCC grid just before a race - its full of hangers on - marshals in orange stick out like sore thumbs!)

I'm still convinced we wear white. If I do make it to a meeting, I'll be in my whites! We let you lads and lasses wear orange on our side of the pond!

Probably mid 70's, when Eric Ridler of the BMRMC managed to source a supply of Orange overalls that where - a) Cheapish, b) hard wearing, c) high visibility, d) were made of natural fibres and could be 'Probanised'.

Prior to this we made do with anything we could get hold of, though some drivers did donate old overalls to the marshals - the problem with these was that it made it difficult to distiguish from a distance if the driver was out of the car, when several people round the wreck were wearing drivers overalls.

Some people will do anything to avoid getting on with their revision.

Well, obviously the French must be wrong and we wouldn't want to be seen to be following the lead of one of the Colonies now would we?

More likly we rejected white as after about 2 hours on circuit at a wet Donington Park the whites would be orange anyway
