Oh my god.

I'm... Speechless. Just returned from school to find the news of this.

This is shocking. This is as big as is gets. The legendary... Brock.

With great sadness CAMS advises that Peter Brock, Australian motor racing legend, has today died in an accident during Targa West, a tarmac special stage rally being conducted near Perth, Western Australia.

The accident occurred at approximately 11:50am WST. The co-driver has been conveyed to hospital in a stable condition.

The Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) will conduct a full investigation into the incident. In the mean time, CAMS and event officials are working with the relevant civil authorities.

On behalf of the motor sport community, CAMS offers its sincere sympathy to Peter's family and many friends.

CAMS will issue additional statements as further information becomes available for release.

Colin Osborne, CAMS President, will be holding a media conference at the South Australian Office of CAMS at 3.30pm today.
Don't know if anyone else has posted this. Sorry if they have.

My brother just rang me and told me the news.

As you can tell be my forum name of a long time ago, I'm a 70's forged Ford fan.

I never once underestimated the skill of Mr Brock though. As a 45 year old bloke who loves domestic motorsport all I can say this is a real tragedy for the sport. If ever there was a leading light, well Peter you were it, others were defined by your presence.

Condolences to the Brock family.

I cant believe I watched him race just last Saturday at Goodwood and was explaining to my friends, as he slid the Holden FX round in the wet, what a motor sport hero he was. RIP

A message to all people going down to Bathurst. In honour of The Mountain King, can all going to the 2006 Super Cheap Auto 1000 please wear black or red arm bands. From Greg Barton, a motorsport lover and a proud fan of the late Peter Brock.
Good call Greg, an easy and effective way to pay your respects.

Three weeks time is going to feel quite surreal but what a perfect way to say 'thank you' and 'long live the legend of Peter Brock' at the very circuit that helped make him that legend.

RIP Peter, you will live forever at the mountain

Absolutely stunned. I met Brocky in New Zealand January 1996. I still have the poster which he Dick Johnson and Jim Richards signed, proudly displayed in my office. A really nice trio, true heros and legends.

Senna that is a nice idea. I think it would be a tremendous display of humility for the race or the place to be dedicated to him like that.

The thing with Mr Brock was that he was more than a great driver, he had a three dimensional personality that he wasn't afraid to share with the rest of us - recent warts and all.

To me that demands more respect than even his stellar motorsport achievements.

I was just going through the Goodwood programme last night and saw his name there. Maybe in the first instances of grief it is too early to look for an explanation but could it be that doing an event in Europe and then the next one just 5 days later down under, does not go very well with the time differences that have to be coped with?

Peter Perfect

Sad news indeed...a true Champion and the man did so much for Aussie Motor sport.

Heres hoping also ex-motorcycle racer Mick Hone is OK.

Words can't do justice in situations like these...

Brock was a majestic driver - a sight to behold.

But what impressed the punter was his rapport with them. He did the extraordinary to make complete strangers feel appreciated.

Anyone can drive a car fast - few can touch so many people in such a positive manner.

A truly sad day - my sincerest condolences to his family and friends. Peter will be sorely missed by those that knew him, and many that didn't.

The world is poorer for his loss.

And I hope Mick Hone is ok - last I heard was that he was stable.

PS. Can we please change the title of the thread to something a little more respectful to the biggest name Australian motorsport has ever known?

Perhaps some kind of tribute on Lap 5 of the Great race would be appropriate. Running the 05 A9X as a pace car for a lap...

http://www.bowdensown.com.au/cars/brocka9x.html

I remember on Lap 3 in nascar for a season everyone stood up with 3 fingers raised. On lap 5 everyone could raise a hand.
