NASCAR Cup Round #11: Southern 500-Darlington

It's BO time. The Southern 500 should be run 5 months from now, but at least the Labor Race is back in Dixie where it ought to be and not at some damned Cali speedway.

JAYSKI

As for Darlington, I hear it's a tough track and that it is fun to watch cars with fenders muck about it's confines. Also hear that some driver back in the 50s landed his plane on the backstretch which is now the frontstretch because his road license was revoked and he was late to the race becuase he had been partying the night/morning before. Now drivers Tweet their displeasure of how someone BEAT them from their I-phones while the hired pilot flies THEM around. Kids these days...

Green flag sometime Saturday night. Weather could be a factor again. Please don't talk about rain tires or tyres....

Sorry boss, I'm falling off my game. Darlington is the best track in Nascar, although I prefer it during the daytime for some reason.

Almirola is 2 laps down with Parrot as crew chief, Ambrose is 8 laps down - been a joke since he couldn't make the chase last year & changed crew chiefs, bet Stanley/Dewalt are excited... Even Danica has 2 laps on him - time to draw a line in the sand!

Vintage Kyle Busch/Dave Rodgers choke job

Vintage Kenseth late race

Not a vintage Darlington race, although this was almost a carbon copy of the 1998 Southern 500.

Always good to see Kyle throw it away in the end. Darlington is awesome 15 to 20 laps on new tires, and even when they fall off, it being such a hard place to get around, so narrow, so fast, and so difficult...just good fun.

The Cheesehead is looking very strong.

Ambrose' new beard was probably the most interesting part of that race.

Kenseth is coming good. You'd wonder what Logano was up to last year.

Interesting to note Matt Kenseth said that was the biggest win of his career.

He gets it.

Best was a 3rd at Darlington before that... DW was going on about the historical aspect of the track, must mean something to the drivers racing there!

Trying the "Jimmy Johnson Look"

He seems to be established as a midfielder!

I still can't grasp the RPM crew cheif switch. Ambrose was a contender before that, and IMO Almirola has never been more than a pretender no matter which team he has been with. One win (with Denny Hamlin driving half the race) in a Joe Gibbs Nationwide car? If you can't win multiple races in NW, in a Gibbs car, you haven't earned the right to even compete at the top level.

Jimmie Johnson was mediocre in nationwide with only 1 win.

^ true, but JJ was in a third rate team that had just jumped into the then Busch series from ASA. Nowhere close to Gibbs in terms of budget, equipment or personnel.

Didn't he finish top 10 in points that year as well? He later got a call from Jeff Gordon to drive for a new car entry (I think) that Hendrick added to his stable. and thus History was born.

the Blick was a pretty handy NW crew chief for Edwards a few years ago though. Lost his mojo?

Yeah, he was never that great in Cup. I know he worked with Ragan before Roush cut down to 3 cars. The next year, he didn't do well with Burton at all.
