Cadwell Park memories/photographs by Mike Dixon
Some old Cadwell photos by my friend and neighbour Mike Dixon. I’ve persuaded him to let us see some of his great archive here, note they are Mike’s copyright. Mike was a reporter and photographer for both Autosport and Motoring News in the 60s/70s, mostly at Cadwell or Snetterton. He is still behind the lens on occasion but you are more likely to find him in officialdom these days, he works as an MSA steward. Any queries on these, Mike can be contacted by e-mail at mikedixon7@lineone.net
September 1969 and Formula 3 was the main event. Tim Schenken leads Cyd Williams, Ronnie Peterson and Mike Beuttler into Mansfield corner. The same four lead the field onto the Park Straight. Here again at Mansfield. Schenken passes the pits, note the Peterson grafitti! James Hunt, Lotus 59 1970 Barn Corner Tom Walkinshaw, March 703 1970 Wilson Fittipaldi, Lotus at Barn Corner 1970 Dave Walker, Peter Hanson and Wilson Fittipaldi, 1970 Monoposto Anco of Brian Toft Gerry Marshall in his Old Nail Firenza 1972 A view from the barn, 1975 Martin Raymond, Daren, 1972 Bernard Vermilio, JPS lotus 73 1972 Roger Williamson, GRD 372 1972 Team Iberia Ensign 1972, note the wealthy driver with flask of coffee by his Bentley Works March 723 of Jochen Mass, over the mountain. Tony Sugden’s Escort leads the field into the hairpin on the club circuit. More to come…. |

Many thanks for posting those photos. That F3 meeting in '69 was the first meeting I marshalled at. Many fond memories of the genuine good old days. Happy days indeed.........

Wonderful pictures thanks Andrew for posting.
Interesting to see that in 1970 only Peter Hanson seems to have a rear wing, shortly after they all joined the winged brigade in F3. As for the Lotus 73 I had forgotten how nasty it looked, although I seem to remember that Tony Trimmer woke up Europe at Monaco that year. |

1972 really wasn't a good year for attractive Formula 3 cars with that Lotus 73, March 723 and the Ensign. The GRD wasn't much prettier in my opinion. They are all especially ugly compared to the cars from just two years earlier in 1970!
Fantastic photos though. I've never raced at Cadwell but it has always looked incredible. |
