Is the Brickyard 400 that important?
I've read several websites claiming that Ganassi conquered the Triple Crown of American motorsport. Long Beach (Indycar race), Laguna Seca (MotoGP), Sebring (12 Hours) and Daytona (24 Hours) may disgree with that. But even within Nascar, is the Brickyard 400 the second most important race of the season?

I'll bite.
Since I could only vote for one, I voted to put the Southern 500 back on the correct date, but I feel the 600 is also more important to stockcar drivers than the Brickyard. Daytona 500, Southern 500, WORLD 600 and then the Brickyard 400, in that order for me. However, it is the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and like it has been stated by numerous drivers, just being able to race there is a great privilege, one that most racing drivers the world over will never be able to do. Winning there seems to have meant a lot to the drivers, perhaps more so than the others, AND perhaps the other three races have lost a bit of the luster over the past years (along with NASCAR in general), but they will ALWAYS take the prestige over the 400, IMO. For a Indy single seater man like Ganassi the Brickyard 400 is important.

I'd say just based on the history of the track and the idea of stock cars racing at a historically single-seater race track is enough alone to make it the 2nd most important race on the schedule.
Read some of the quotes from the drivers about their feelings on running at the Brickyard. That should tell you how important this race is to them. |
