2008 SBD Motorsport British Sprint Championship

With three rounds under our belt the championship has seen a big shake up.

At Croft it was business as usual for Roy Dawson as minor problems sidelined many of his challengers. At Castle Combe the bad weather contributed to a thoroughly deserved win for Steve Miles (aka Inspector Gadget or Sparky!). Mallory saw the first appearance of Matt Oliver, the defending champion, and the youngster showed his class by taking the Top 12 run-off from a determined stewart Robb Junior with Roy Dawson back in third.

Rd 1 Croft:
1 Roy Dawson (3.5 Gould-NME GR55) 100.20
2 Stewart Robb Junior (4.0 Pilbeam-Judd MP88) 101.16
3 Stewart Robb (4.0 Pilbeam-Judd MP88) 103.32

Rd 2 Castle Combe:
1 Steve Miles (2.0 Van Diemen-Zetec RF96MM05) 158.31secs
2 Nick Algar (1.6 DJ Firehawk-Suzuki) 160.22secs
3 Des Stephenson (2.0 Formula Vauxhall Lotus) 169.25secs

Rd 3 Mallory Park:
1 Matt Oliver (4.0 Gould-Judd/Connaught GR37) 56.08secs
2 Stewart Robb Junior (4.0 Pilbeam-Judd KV4 MP88) 57.14secs
3 Roy Dawson (3.5 Gould-NME GR55) 58.35secs

Championship standings:
1 Roy Dawson 25pts; 2 Stewart Robb Junior 24pts; 3 Steve Miles 23pts;
4 Nick Algar 22pts; 5 Stewart Robb Senior 21pts; 6 Graham Porrett 16pts; etc

There was a little piece of history made at Mallory Park when Heather Calder wrote her name in the record books at just 17 as she became the youngest driver to firstly qualify for a British Championship Top 12 and secondly score points. Her improvements throughout the day were a model of how to go about the art of sprinting.

Blazing a trail

Hello All

Visited Mallory for round 3 of theChampionship

New on the sprint scene as a spectator and keen photographer but thoroughly enjoyed the day capturing some good pics, not least of all Simon Bainbridge blazing a trail around the circuit.

Some great photos there Clik, especially of the Audi on fire.

Thank you Steve for all your information you kept supplying us up at Shaw’s hairpin in the morning. One question I do have is in the hill climb top 12 runoffs if the hill record is broken there is an extra point given to that driver. Was there any extra points up for grabs on Sunday?

Yes an extra point is awarded each time the record is broken...

Sorry but there were NO extra points at either Castle Combe or Mallory Park as there were no CHAMPIONSHIP records for either venue. In fact at Mallory there had been no previous sprint that used the same layout as was used on Sunday.

Looking forward there will be no extra points on offer at either of the east Fortune events for the same reason. However next year ...........

I thought the question was written using the Hillclimb Championship as an example of the Extra Point system and actually referred to the BSC. Anyway between us we got there in the end!

Thank you Steve and Blackx.

I was using the British Hill Climb Championship as an example because I have more experience of hill climbs then of sprints.
