Are you home now Mike? When I woke at 06.00 to hear the rain lashing down and a hoolie blowing across the downs I thought of you and that huge awning!

'Luckily' the awning had collected so much water that no amount of gusting wind was going to move it! (Due to the slope it was on rather than design fault...)

Look at the positives- it was dry saturday when all the erecting was done and cars unloaded. (And sun shone for a while during our 'gentle' bike ride through 'open countryside' )

It wasn't raining yesterday when all the awnings were taken down either, although everything was a trifle damp still. And by time I got home yesterday afternoon there wasn't a cloud in the sky!

Reflections on the Month of May 2012

Been funny old month but one I will never forget.Dissapointment at Monaco and the rain and more rain at Stoke Row.
Thats the negatives but as I allways say "look forward not back".First rule for next year Alan Morgan when we do the Saturday morning shop,"DO NOT BUY A BOTTLE OF SCOTCH!!!!!!".
Friday evening, Alan arrives and we"SRRC committee" all have a last minuit brief about the weekend, then me Alan and Peter Olley the tour seceratary moved on for dinner in a pub in Goring.
We now have 28 cars entered for the tour with a late entry from Kim Shearn all the way from Oz in HRTR5 XK150. 30 was the target set by us and Craven Motor Club who did all the organising and if anything comes out of this year it will be the freindship formed by the two clubs which can only grow.I could write pages and pages about the professional way Craven performed with the event, the route of the tour, marshalling, corse cars so on and so on and they even sourced the trophies and rally plates one of which sits proudly on my office wall with "event director" engraved on. Very embarrassing as I did naff all but make the forst phone call to Craven way back at the start of the year.
Up early Saturday and off to Tesco's by 7am then rendezvous with Mike Bell just the other side of Henley and guide him and Artic" which without would of been a dissaster".Spent the rest of the morning setting up awnings and clearing the yard all in time for the bike ride at 2pm.
We had 30 cyclist for the off road" family"bike ride.Having done the route a couple of weeks before I was very worried about Mr and Mrs HRTR5 as both Freddie and Emily were riding pillian but both looking very excited so I decided to keep them company but managed to crash into the back of Mrs HRTR5 instead.
The Sun shone and all was well with competitors enjoying the ride and later BBQ and then followed by the local jazz band from the village entertaining us all Saturday evening.
Saturday night and even before that dredded bottle had been opened and I was begining to feel the stress setting in as in our heart of hearts we knew we were going to be in for a very wet day.
Sunday morning and I have never felt so bad, then Jim rings and the clutch has gone on his XK140 so in the pooring rain and along with everyone saying "Iain, Iain, Iain,"where does this go, and have you got this, and there is no electric, and can I park there not there, anyway Clutch bled and Jim's on his way to the start of the tour. The stories are flooding in about competitors adventures, but I could write a book on them so its not for today I am afraid. The feed back has been so posative from everyone who took part and it looks like the winner was a MK1 Escort.
10.45 and I get the message that the cars are leaving the start from Castol research station which is near Pangbourne and the route will take the cars about one and a half hours so my tummy by this time is feeing worse than ever.Help on hand with Fay,Alan and Ian "Chiggley"and I feel more relaxed knowing the Marshaling is in good hands.
12.00 Noon still raining but we are getting visitors and we get ready for the first car to arrive. Its an AC Cobra ,but they broke down so drove off the route and came straight too Stoke Row, then Bob Wood "Lovely man"in his Invictor but he got lost so again came straight too us.So two DNF ers already.Never mind,Then Crikee its the Austin Seven arriving but they were not on the tour but the very atractive passanger suddenly shouted Iain !!! so I looked and said "Helen"!!! cut a long story short and old flame from the 70,s but so nice too see her again.
Then the first finnisher and as I said my mate Rick and his son Duncan in their MK1 Escort.I interviewed all the finnishes on the P A system but could of done a better job,I will next year.Ross Brawn was one of the last cars to come in he had had a puncture so swopped cars along the route,I suggested we go straight to the FIA stewards which caused a giggle but it was very good of him to support us which he has done since we started.
It kept on raining but a lot of people came along but understandably did not stay too long and I cant blame them. The Pit stop challenge and Auction were dissapointing but "ces't la vie".
We are still working out money raised which will again support the baby dialysis machine, robbie the robot and support for stroke victims.I will post later the total.
Thank you my 10/10th friends for all your help and support.2013 its got too be dry.

Fantastic Iain, well done - now you know what Lord March goes through!
I watched TV all afternoon to catch a glimpse of the Stoke Row Festival of Speed but they kept on showing people parading in boats.

Hey Iain, if Ross swapped cars during the tour, what was the first one- considering the second one was a 275GTB.......

Max, the gentle bike ride though the local countryside (as it was sold to me and obviously James & family!) turned out to be a similar route to that taken by the dualathon last year! Not aware of this I pumped tyres up for 'Tarmac' and so over the rough stuff bike was all over the place! I only came a cropper once and landed on grass, fortunately.... There were odd places where the arrows had got misplaced and every time I ventured away from the security of locals I got lost and had to retrace route. Reckon if it was 25k I covered 35!

Good fun though and certainly went past some posh houses on the odd road section....

I remember a case in the States (where else) when a guy riding a motorcycle was pulled by the cops wearing a helmet on his knee and not on his head.
Anyway the law made him put it on his head as in that particular State he had to wear one, however he fell off up the road and broke his kneecap and tried to sue the law for the injury. You couldn't make it up !!!!

As always...

Well done to all the organisers, which includes Iain of course, and locals who 'did their bit' to support in so many different ways.

Well, it was built in a big shed really, Roger. Better seen on the track, though.

Incidentally, congrats on win with the LC2, one of my all time favourite cars, and in one of my favourite liveries, too!

Hope you cleaned off the stains made by the mugs when you were using the rear wing as a table, and as for the kids using the front wing as a trampoline I just hope the superglue worked !!!!
