One for the hillclimb historians

This might be one for the hardcore anoraks out there.

I live in Richmond, Surrey and compete in hillclimbs occasionally.

I heard many moons ago that one of the first ever hillclimbs in this country was held on Star and Garter hill in Richmond.

Does anyone know anything about this? I am curious because of the local connection.

A quick google reveals that the hill is beloved of cyclists but am reasonably certain that it was one of our types of hillclimbs that I heard about.

Any info would be appreciated as I have been curious about this for years!

You're quite right it was the first speed event organised in the British Isles on Friday 9 June 1899. The start was down by the Dysart Arms and the yard of the Star and Garter home was used to marshal the entries before the competition and between runs.

The hill was a noted challenge to cyclists (and still would be I would think) and this was one of the reasons for the choice. The second part of the competition involved a descent of the hill with a downhill stop and restart test. The flag marshal for that one must have been quick on his feet.

It was used for second time in June 1902 in association with climbs of "the Test Hill" in Richmond Park - another favourite cyclist's hill, which lies on the road between Robin Hood Gate and Kingston Gate.

I drive up and down both hills almost daily and it's wonderful to know this sort of thing. Actually, there are 2 hills in Richmond Park that lie between Kingston Gate and Robin Hood Gate - wonder which one it was?

Do you know any more? I wonder who organised these events? I am tempted to see whether there are any local historians who know anything - finding some photos - for example - would be very special.

Occurs to me that this event has some importance given what you say about it being the first speed event in this country.
