Yes, Button remains under contract with McLaren/Honda for 2017 and steps down as one of the two primary drivers and takes up role of 3rd/substitute/test driver with possible other activities as well.

announcement has only be made a couple of months ago...

I knew Button was stepping back from F1 duties, but have read nothing about him doing Super GT.

It will be interesting to see who it is, whether it's Tandy, Montoya or Bamber. Obviously no chance of getting the Hulk back now

I remember it was announced at the last Super GT by Sam Collins. Specifically he will be driving in the Drago Modulo car

Not through the official channels, but Sam Collins passed the note to John Hindhaugh who announced it in last week's Super GT stream.

He'll be in the #15 with Makino, an old-school experienced pro/young hotshoe pairing.

I must have missed that. Obviously that removes Button from the list.
Like CDT mentioned, Christensen should of course be on that list, too.

Slowest LMP1 over one lap. The writing is on the wall.

Let's be honest, he's always been the weakest link of that Porsche squad, albeit on a high-level. If they keep him around as ambassador they can still use his popularity but won't have to "waste" a seat for him.
As one cynic to another, I think Webber proved today (again) that he is as fast as any of the Porsche drivers.

Tandy or Bamber, says Autosport.

Not sure that Tandy has the etiquette in certain situations, despite the Le Mans win...although both have had their share of the red mist...

Tandy for sure is entertaining each time he's in a race car.

Porsche LMP1 Discussion

I doubt Christensen will get the nod which is of nothing of his doing but going up against two other guys in Tandy and Bamber who not only have 919 experience but have won the biggest race of all with it. It's hard to split Tandy or Bamber, you can't go wrong either way but I feel that Bamber has a slight edge performance wise.

Is it definitely only Webber going?

The whispers of Lieb/Dumas leaving or dropping back to GTs seem to have died away since June.
Funny that

I believe he was amongst the quickest of the Porsche LMP1 drivers at Le Mans overall and the quickest at night?

That's the impression I had during the race, though I haven't looked into the data, he had amazing stints at night. I remember he doing 3:19 lap after lap. But as I said above, it's just my impression. Don't know whether he was actually the fastest driver during the night.

Bamber was also blisteringly quick in the night, I doubt there'd be much to differentiate them over their stints.

But then again, they were the third car which probably had explicit instruction to be the hare. Bamber, Tandy had nothing to lose. They have certainly shown talent in that event, but it's not like their is any reason to consider sacking Dumas, Lieb who can get it done just as well.

Porsche also needs to consider about who will be driving the 2 GTE-PRO cars next year in the WEC.

That should not be a problem if you still have Mako - Bamber or Tandy - Christensen - Estre - Lietz - Long - Henzler - ... on your payroll.

If needed they can promote one of their junior drivers (e.g. Müller?) or one of the many Supercup or Carrera Cup talents to the GT squad.

The new RSR debut is in the 24h Daytona.
They have plenty of drivers. It's not an issue.
