I believe most of the cars live in the museum basement.

I saw the race and it had all the spectacle of drying paint. If you want to recreate the essence of a 250F why on earth would you put a straight four Ford engine in it ?

Just a thought- are we sure there was just one Formula Classic race (or pair of races) at the May BPRO GT meeting?. What makes me wonder about this is that I'm pretty sure I saw a Formula Classic race at Donington- but equally sure I wasn't at that May BPRO meeting.
Was there maybe a second, possibly at the DTM meeting in July, which I'm much more confident that I did attend?. I'll have a search back through my old race programmes to see if I've got one for either the May BPRO or July DTM meetings. (Although Donington's my 'local' circuit, at that time I was living about 200 miles away, so only got there a handful of times a year) Tom Wheatcroft talked about Formula Classic in his autobiography, 'Thunder in the Park' back in 2005- he said that the major problem was issues with the car and engine. The engines were originally built by Holbay, who were already in financial troubles at the time they took on the contract, and eventually went bust after the death of founder John Read in a flying accident- by this time, Wheatcroft had written off the entire Formula Classic project (at a cost of £1.6m apparently), although some development work did apparently continue on the car for some time after the series was canned. According to Tom, they ended up with 26 cars stored in the museum basement at Donington. He does also refer to them running a 'couple' of events, rather than just one. I think there were 15 for sale as a job lot, as mentioned earlier.
Millington replaced the original Holbay engines, at more cost, and probably helped established Millington as a company so perhaps we should be thankful for that! |

I have also written in the finishing order as, 9, 18, 4, 16, 17, 12, 3, 11, 10 , 14. It also lists the races going to Osterreichring, Brno, Zandvoort, Zolder, Nogaro, Zandvoort again, Paul Ricard & finishing at Donington on October 21/22. There was no race in the final Donington programme though. |

Did Perry McCarthy compete? I don't remember him mentioning it in his autobiography

One of the problems was it was very expensive to take part. After poor entries to the first round, the grid was filled by giving cheap or free entries to some quite quick drivers - can you imagine Perry paying? This must have severely cheesed off the amateur drivers who paid full whack.

Hi Bidochon. Obviously we never met before (avant l'Eure c'est pas l'Eure…) but I had a race car prepared at Pacy and use to have my licence made by St André's club. Thousands moons ago… Do you intend to race this car or re-create an historic series in spite of the rather modern engine? Good idea considering that we have the Mazda MX-5 series starting now…
