After Thruxton's mayhem, 19 cars arrived at Silverstone...

Round 6 – June 9, 1985 at Silverstone- 20 laps

1./ #1 / Andy Rouse / Rouse / A / Ford Sierra XR4Ti/33m23.95

NCF./#70/Patrick Watts/North Essex/C/Ford Escort RS1600i/13 laps-

DNF./#5?/Dave Brodie/Brodie/A/Mitsubishi Starion Turbo/1 lap- turbo
DNF./#79/John Morris/Brooklyn/C/Ford Escort RS1600i/1 lap- brakes

Got the Motoring News report, so can fill in a bit of background to this one. A fairly dull race, dominated by Rouse after Brodie's lap 2 turbo failure. It could have been very different- Brodie putting the Starion on pole, over 2 seconds faster than Rouse- and no less than 4 seconds(!) under Rouse's 1984 Silverstone lap record....
It was livened up by an entertaining duel for 3rd in class between ARDT team-mates Dooley & Kirby, culminating in both spinning on the penultimate lap, although a down-on-power Phil Dowsett was too far back to capitalize.
The Class C battle was an epic:

After an enthralling 20 laps, Curnow eventually pipped Hodgetts' frequently kerb-hopping rally car, the three class C leaders covered by just 0.7s in a tight finish.Wouldnt be a bad idea if another 20 or so people could be persuaded to prepare Group A RS1600is...'
Grid:

1- Brodie (Starion/A)- 1m35.23
2- Rouse (XR4Ti/A)- 1m37.53
3- McGrath (Rover/A)- 1m38.74
4- Sytner (635CSi/A) 1m40.11
5- Goode (Bluebird Turbo/B)- 1m40.60
6- Sheene (Supra/A)- 1m40.92
7- Hall (Rover/A)- 1m42.29
8- Longman (Escort RS Turbo/B)- 1m42.31
9- Dooley (GTV6/B)- 1m42.75
10- Newman (635CSi/A)- 1m43.69
11- Kirby (GTV6/B)- 1m43.74
12- Dowsett (GTV6/B)- 1m43.99
13- Curnow (RS1600i/C)- 1m46.97
14- Belcher (RS1600i/C)- 1m47.40
15- Hodgetts (RS1600i/C) -1m47.94
16- Morris (RS1600i/C)- 1m48.52
17- Watts (RS1600i/C)- 1m48.67
18- Drury (GTV6/B)- 1m49.19
19- Crudgington (Corolla/C) 1m52.27

Some background on the entry:

Two additions to the entry, one very significant- Longman's Escort RS Turbo finally homologated, The other was a returning Tony Crudgington, whose Corolla had been sidelined by 'a heavy practice off' at Silverstone in March. Sponsorship now came from Clausthaler Lager (appropriately, as Tony was a publican)

According to the report, no-shows from the published entry list were Geoff Kimber-Smith's Corolla, Barry Lee's RS1600i, and- Steve Soper in a TWR Rover...

Several teams had had a busy time since Thruxton:
  • Hughes of Beaconsfield/Toyota GB were back with the 1984 Supra for Sheene (apparently the car he'd used at the beginning of the season)
  • Terry Drury Racing were hard-pressed to prepare two Alfa GTV6s in time for this weekend, cars for Phil Dowsett and Drury himself arriving at the circuit 'with the paint still wet' Both cars in a new red/yellow colourscheme
  • At Brooklyn, Hodgetts' car was still being rebuilt and the teamopted to build a completely new car in time for Donington. Consequently, Chris borrowed mechanic Tim Hill's Group A rally car for the weekend, practising the Brooklyn Motorsport/ECS machine complete with tax disc, aerial and number plates'
Hodgetts commented that 'it says a lot for the team when I can borrow a mechanic's car and race that. It might be better if the circuit was cut up a little, I think it's probably better-suited to the rough. Still, in the circumstances, it's not bad is it?
  • Team-mate Morris had his regular car repaired after Thruxton- 'It's the same car with five new panels'
  • The Patrick Watts North Essex car was described as 'a ten-day wonder', built up from scratch in that time to replace the car totalled at Thruxton- it was finished off in the Silverstone paddock on Saturday morning, only one panel- the bonnet- salvaged from the original shell.
The scrutineers sealed all four turbo cars after the race, so the result remained provisional....

Yes, I'd like to take a look at the race report for that one- Hall's qualifying performances were quite often in the lower end of the top 10, and outpaced by the fastest Class B car, but outqualified by the fastest couple of 1600s and 9th and last in the race here suggests the Rover might not have been 100% healthy...

By the look of the times (and from the Donington round 7) this was held on the National Circuit of 3.149 kms. For all three drivers this was new (BTCC?) records.

Think we've covered the changes to the entry here in an earlier post, but as always, a few extra cars on the grid for a GP support.
Seasonal debuts here for:
Class A
2nd Rouse Sierra (Klaus Niedzwiedz)- second car seen at the 2 GP supports and the TT, with BT Radiopaging sponsorship
2nd Brodie Starion (Vern Schuppan) Schuppan would also share the car with Brodie at the TT.

Class B:
Ilford Photo Escort RS Turbo- Mike Smith, presumably his regular prodsaloon? He'd be back at Brands later in the year
Demon Tweeks Golf- Alan Minshaw: the Demon Tweeks Mk2 Golf only came out a couple of times in '85- the GP meeting and the TT, Minshaw basically racing for fun having sunk a considerable amount of money into what proved to be an uncompetitive car

Class C:
Marshall-Asquith RS1600i (Karl Jones) A one-off appearance- I'd been puzzled by the story behind this, as I'd never seen any other mention of Gerry Marshall being involved with an RS1600i- Karl Jones was usually
doing prodsaloons in a Fiat Strada Abarth. I asked Gregor M. about it on another forum, and he filled in the details- a one-off entry in an Escort hired from Richard Longman.
Barry Lee RS1600i- the first of a couple of 1985 appearances for Lee's Escort, last seen in 'Total' colours the previous season

18-Kimber-Smith (Corolla/C)
19-Crudgington (Corolla/C)
20-
21-Moss (RS1600i/C)

I seem to be missing qualifying positions for the two Drury Alfas, and the Watts & Lee RS1600is

The entry was mainly the usual suspects, without the various one-offs and guest appearances from the GP meeting. Notably absent from Class A was Mike Newman- apparently on holiday in France. Additions were the 3rd Brooklyn Escort for Alex Moss (a regular for the rest of the season) and Barry Lee's Escort, not seen again after this meeting

Again, I've got the Motoring News report so can fill in some background

Big news here was the unexpected appearance of Tom Walkinshaw in what the report described as an 'unsignwritten ETC testing hack Rover'-the car was in Bastos colours, but without the sponsors' logos and signwriting. Walkinshaw was running outside the championship, as the car wasn't registered for points. His reason for racing according to the MN report was to 'give my neck a workout.I trapped a nerve when I was T-boned in New Zealand earlier this year, and I've been having physio since. It flared up again after Spa, and now I'm checking it'll be OK for the TT'
He was also testing new wheel rims

Graham Goode had been deducted 10 championship points for his exclusion at the Silverstone GP support earlier in the season.

Mike Newman was back after missing Snetterton in favour of a holiday in the South of France- his 635 also having had an engine rebuild, but still not performing as it should- 'I've no revs at the top end'

Class B was suffering from a 50% shortfall in Alfas- the Terry Drury pair absent here. Jon Dooley's ARDT car was now in John West colours, Napolina having withdrawn as a sponsor

Richard Belcher went off into the tyres during the untimed practice session, the Jeffreys car being repaired (although slightly scarred) for first qualifying. North Essex Motorsport boss Julian May loaned the headlights from his road car to help repair the Escort!

24- Grimshaw (Escort RS Turbo/B) 1m51.36
25- Postan (Renault 5 Turbo/B) 1m52.03

Some background from the Autosport & MN reports...

Several new faces in the entry:
David Sears in the BT Radiopaging Rouse Sierra
Barry Barnes in the sole Drury Alfa
David Grimshaw in his Racal Vodaphone-sponsored Escort RS Turbo prodsaloon
Alex Postan in a Renault 5GT Turbo Challenge car- this was run by Joe Simons Racing, sponsored by Elephant Memory Systems. The team had a difference of opinion with the scrutineers, having apparently misread the regulations- the little Renault was seriously underweight and had to be ballasted for the race...

Returning were Dennis Leech's Rover, only seen at a handful of rounds this year, and Mike Smith's RS Turbo- the Ilford Photo car described as 'now more of a Group A machine' by Motoring News.
Autosport went into slightly more detail- apparently it wasn't Mike's regular prodsaloon mount: 'The car itself came from Ford at Boreham and began life as a rally machine- the ride height wasnt quite right, and it was maybe 40bhp down on Longman's car, but it was still really quick in a straight line.'
According to Smith 'It was a really levelling experience. If you've ever tried waterskiing, you'll know what I mean, the power is phenomenal, I was just hanging on'

Brodie's Starion was running on Pirellis for the first time- the Pirelli D5s he used in qualifying described by Autosport as 'probably the best tyres in Europe apart from the unobtainable 17" Dunlops seen on the European Rovers....'

The Sears XR4Ti was carrying a camera for Ford- Sears commented 'It's difficult trying to keep Andy in the frame though. It's hard enough trying to concentrate on sticking with him, without having a camera to worry about too'

Sytner qualified 3rd on super-soft Pirelli D7 qualifying tyres- and opted to start the race on a set of them as well.... 'I've got nothing to lose, I might as well put on a show for the public'

Your describtion of the exterior reminds of how the Vitesses looked at the Nürburgring ETCC race in July - as seen on the Duke ETCC review 1985 DVD - where the team was running a combination of BBS rims combined with Speedlines. Pictures from Spa, the next ETCC round, suggest that the team mainly used Speedlines and that they were the preferred choice for the next one and a half season with the TWR Rovers. Don't know if these speculations has anything to do with the Motoring News news?

Wonder if that was actually the car that got pranged by Steve Soper at the Donington ETC round earlier that year, which was then rebuilt and used as a spare car?

Was that the car tangelling with the Magnum Volvo? Seen a picture of a quite battered, but still running 240 Turbo, so I wonder how bad the Rover came out of the ordeal?

I'm currently typing an unofficial point standing comparing it with the standing on the BTCC site: http://www.btcc.net/html/history_sta...p?season_id=28
For most drivers it seems to match, but missing fastest laps from round 5 at Thruxton, round 8 at Silverstone, round 9 at Snetterton and round 12 at Silverstone does screw the tally for some top drivers.
For class A I can deduce that Andy Rouse was likely to be fastest on three of these occasions, while Dave Brodie would have been fastest in the remaining round. That would make Brodie the "winner" with six fastest laps to Rouse's five, the final (actually first round) going to Neil McGrath.
Class B points seems to be a bit of a mess but class winner Rob Kirby could do with a bonus point as it seems right now.
Chris Hodgetts seems to have taken three fastest laps so far unaccounted for while Richard Belcher and Tony Crudgington likely has one apiece making it a total of five missing fastest laps in four races!
I will likely finish the tables for some time tomorrow, but any additional information regarding fastest laps in these four races will be most helpful.

Jesper, The Soper car was stacked in qualifying at Donington IIRC, then rebuilt and apparently later utilised as a spare and then onto the winter raced in New Zealand. There's something about it in the chassis thread.

The Donny Soper and Brands Walkinshaw car being the same is still supposition though really

Thank you for the fact, chunterer. Looking at Frank's site
http://homepage.mac.com/frank_de_jon...Donington.html
does tell of another Rover 1-2-3 victory, although Soper was rested for the race it seems.

To re-build the car and painting it up in the regular colours seems sensible enough. I don't know weather the Bastos letters were painted or a set of stickers, but would not be my first choice to apply if the car was relegated to that of a spare, time consuming as it would be.
Regarding the missing Bastos signature I looked at a few British F1 Grand Prix pictures of Lotus, McLaren and Zakspeed running without tobacco advertising ..at the Marlboro British Grand Prix! This would have effected a BTCC race at Brands Hatch too, I would suspect?

Notes:
Missing bonus points likely for Andy Rouse (3) and Dave Brodie (1)
Pete Hall finished last overall and fourth in class at round 5 at Thruxton, but don't know the number of laps he completed. He could have been classified as "Not classified" on this ground thus receiving no points ...and the point calculations would match.
Brian Chatfield has been devided into his Ford Capri starts and his BMW starts in the BTCC classification. I have combined both simply because this was a drivers championship.
Tom Walkinshaw winning his only start, but not registered for the championship. But note that Andy Rouse only received 6 points as best registered driver!

Class B (1601-2500 cc):

Richard Longman has two points too many from my calculations and don't know why.
Graham Goode deducted 10 points for being disqualified at round 8 and probably more.

Notes:
Missing bonus points likely for Chris Hodgetts (1), Richard Belcher (1), Tony Crudgington (1) and Geoff Kimber-Smith (3!, more likely 1).
The 3 point difference for Geoff Kimber-Smith I can't explain except as a calculation mistake (the BTCC page or mine) or that one of his DNFs were in fact eligeble for 2 or 3 points.

Legend:
9, 6, 4, 3, 2, 1 points for top-6 positions
6, 4, 0 points for top-3 positions?
* indicates bonus point for fastest race lap, though missing from rounds 5, 8, 9 and 12
[] indicates position outside top-6 in class
() indicate dropped worst scores
DNF did not finish
DSQ disqualified
DNS did not start
- indicates no participation
Best 9 from 12 rounds to be counted

There's a pic of the Brands car in the Motoring News report, but unfortunately it's a head-on shot in black & white, and the printing is fairly dark. The car clearly carries race number '3' on the bonnet, and certainly looks as if it's in basic Bastos colours. It's hard to tell much else from it, although the rollcage appears to be white...

Without reading the whole Rover thread to check, as I remember, Ken Clarke told us at some point that early cars had steel rollcages and were painted black inside, and later cars had alloy cages and were painted white- the change coming around 1984/5. Certainly most Bastos car pics show cars with white interiors, whereas earlier cars (Fleet, Hepolite, Sanyo) seem to be predominantly black.

Re the signwriting, the Brands car doesn't just lack not just missing the Bastos lettering- Comparing it with this pic of a car in 'non-Bastos' guise at the Nurburgring in '85,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Ro...e_19850706.jpg , the Brands car also lacks the 'Texaco' lettering on the white band between the headlights- there's a prominent 'Dunlop' decal in it's place. I'm guessing that the absence of Bastos lettering at Brands wasn't just down to tobacco advertsing restrictions, but probably because Bastos simply weren't paying the bills for a race outside the ETCC schedule?

Thank you for the picture link - there's an equal beautiful pic of the Magnum Volvo from the same point - demonstrating the BBS-to-Speedline transission it seems. I gues that Major Tom hadn't "invented" Herbie Clips by 1985!?

Herbie Clips was definitely around- it had appeared as a sponsor on occasional rally Rovers in '83/84, and did show up as a sponsor on a BTCC entry in '85- Soper's Metro Turbo one-off at the Silverstone season-opener was backed by Howley Engines, Silver Shield Windscreens and Herbie Clips

Was it ever an money making, profitable company? Legends about Scotsmen and money would suggest yes, but who knows the story?

Soper's couple of '84 Trimoco forays in what appeared to be a regular 'Fleet' ETC car were also 'Herbie Clips' entered I think?

Just for fun!!

How I saw the '85 series entry list had we not suffered the major manufacturer withdrawals during and at the end of 1984:

Class A 2501-3600
Rouse + Sears or guests,
ARE Sierra XR4TI's

Pond + Schlesser/Lovett/Soper/Allam?
ARG TWR Rover Vitesse's

Weaver + Woodman,
CC/BMW GB, BMW 635 CSi's

Sytner + Sutherland?
Sytner BMW 635 CSi's

Sheene + Dron/Hodgetts,
Hughes/Toyota GB Celica Supra's

Brodie,
Colt/BBW Starion Turbo

Leech
Vitesse

McGrath,
Linden Vitesse

Hall,
ARE Vitesse

Newman
635 Csi

Chatfield
Capri/635

Plus the unknown customer of the red 635 ordered by BMW GB?
Plus privateer Volvo 240 (Julian May?) would've been worth it I think at least one car would have been entered)

Class B 1601-2500
Longman
Datapost RS Turbo

Watts + Brundle
Dowson ARG Metro Turbo's

Taft
Klaxon Metro Turbo

Belcher + Roger Jones or Vic Covey
John Jeffrey/Silverscreen Metro Turbos?

Dooley + Kirby
ARDT GTV6's

Dowsett + Smith + Hales
Drury GTV6's

Goode
Nissan Bluebird Turbo

TBA x2,
Sytner BMW 325i's?

Class C to 1600
Hodgetts + Morris + 1
Brooklyn Escort's

Curnow
Datapost Escort

Belcher (I reckon he'd have run a Metro if Dowson had continued I think it was mentioned as a rumour in off season)
John Jeffrey Escort

Pegasus Escort

Julian May Escort?

Greenhalgh
Golf GTi

Crudgington
Corolla

GK-S
Corolla

Gruen
Corolla

Thinking back, can anyone else think of rumoured entrants for that year that didn't materialse, that I've missed?

That privateer Volvo did wonders "Down Under", challenging the otherwise unchallenged Jim Richards on an unregular schedule.
