Toyota also got to run #1/2/3 at LM in '99 though they didn't win the previous year. But then again, Porsche wasn't in the top class that year after withdrawing their entry to concentrate on GT racing and their ultimately stillborn LMP900 car (that was reincarnated as the Carrera GT).

Alonso confirmed for 'as many WEC rounds as possible' according to Autosport.
Including Le Mans, but excluding Fuji (clash with F1) https://www.autosport.com/wec/news/1...ut-with-toyota |

Wonder if he'll do Prologue. The LM Test Day is pretty much given but I'm not sure about HTTT
Hopefully the P1 Orecas will be ready be then, too... EDIT: Oh Bahrain GP conflicts with Ricard, never mind |

Hooray, it's finally gonna happen! Well done McLaren-Renault for letting him do this, it's a big boost to the series. And to think we were worried at the end of last season when Porsche pulled out. Now we have since had two more constructors in LMP1. And now we have a double F1 Champion in it full time. Hopefully this time Toyota win Le Mans, they've got their best chance, so he couldn't have picked a better time

Answers the car number question as well since Toyota have announced 7 & 8.

That bit about Alonso's future in 2019 not yet decided might just be Autosport's own ramblings considering the official Toyota press kit says:
"Fernando, 36, will make his LMP1 race debut at Spa-Francorchamps in May and will compete in all rounds of the 2018-19 season which do not conflict with his existing Formula 1 obligations." So it doesn't say "all rounds of 2018 which do not conflict with F1" I would automatically assume him to do at least Le Mans 2019 too*, with the FIA-ACO nonconflict agreement in place again. Sebring and Spa if they do not conflict. At least Sebring is unlikely to clash, although as I said on the other thread the close proximity to Melbourne might be dangerous *unless he wins it in 2018 and decides that's enough I've done it. But I don't think the likelihood for that is particularly high Last edited by Deleted; 30 Jan 2018 at 15:09. |

Not a clue but if Alonso is so much into doing "traditional" races I would think Sebring is pretty high on that list. Here's hope he'll be able to compete in '19!

United Autosport will be in Sebring 18, so Alonso could race now, but it's only 6 days before the start of the F1 season and I guess it's so much for him.

Has Alonso ever even said a word Sebring from his mouth though. I don't think he really knows about these events at all beyond Le Mans (and now Daytona), I mean in some interview he did go on about how he's been interest for Daytona for years but then in another that's he had never seen a race before or something so... |

Surely unlikely. While he’s managed to wangle an Indy drive, Daytona and blummin’ Le Mans with other races I think this might be pushing it. He’s got to try and pretend F1 is his priority and buggering off just before the season in a period of huge PR might just make everyone question why they are paying him to do other stuff!

I'm pretty sure Alonso knows what Sebring is. But doing one of the worlds toughest endurance races only a week before the first GP of the year is maybe a bit much to ask, especially when the announcement is WEC, not IMSA.

Anyway this sets a great example for other F1 drivers. And creates lots of publicity for the series.

It's not like doing 3 or 4 hours at Sebring is going to leave Alonso too bagged to drive, there's guys going straight from Daytona to Bathurst this week.

No it won’t. However it’s about the other baggage that goes with the opening weekend and where his employees want him to be. Doing the other stuff does detract, even if in a small way, from F1 and some people pay him a lot to do F1. They’ve cut him a lot of slack already.

Detract from F1? I have to confess I'm really not that bothered. I'm personally wholly supportive of getting Alonso into sportscars. Yes, there will be fall-out and I personally would have dropped Lopez without hesitation instead of Davidson, but there you go.... I suspect if Alonso really thought he was onto a winner in F1 this season, he wouldn't have done it. If his employers are prepared to put up with it, all power to him.

Spanish media are talking about the possibility that the WEC advance the date of the 6 Hours of Fuji 1 week so that Fernando Alonso can race. That was the original date of the race and that it was moved so that it does not coincide with the Petit Le Mans.

PLM > Fuji
I'm also happy to see Alonso in the WEC. |

Yeah it sucks, but that's how it is. I'm guessing Fuji would be moved because it's Japan and Toyota. It would be sad for it to clash with Petit. |

Especially as IMSA and the ACO already made an agreement to avoid the clash in the first place.

I'm not arguing it's a good thing of course. I agree it sucks. But the week running up to the F1 season is a huge time for teams. It'll be amazing if he's doing anything but doing interviews and appearances. |
