Clearly some big mistakes and poor thinking have been in play within Holden's marketing area for a little while now. Emma Pinwill left before she could be removed and her co-architect, Mark Harland appears to be on his way.

Decision to name the imported car Commodore, decision to turn their back publicly on the existing customer base (they're now back-peddling on that one), decision to market product in an airy-fairy way rather than promoting the benefits of the product itself, alleged disconnect from dealers, the list goes on.

It was ALWAYS going to be tough time for Holden as local manufacturing finished and they lack "hero" cars from other parts of the GM empire that they could use (as Ford Oz has done with Mustang & Focus RS) but dumb decisions on top of that have not helped the company's position.

For example, there are thousands of V8 engined Holden owners out there, many of whom have laid down $70K plus for their car in the last 18 months or so. If Holden came out now and announced that they'd have RHD Camaros, or Caddys or whatever in 2020, many of those existing owners might wait for those cars before replacing what they have now - but in a vacuum of information, those owners might swap to another brand before Holden's plans are announced.

Just feels like Holden's marketing approach has gone from people actually doing stuff to people just wanting to sound smart, from substance to fluff - at some point heads would have had to roll and it sounds like that is happening.

Speaking with a close friend last week who works at Holden he said much the same thing.

He can't believe how Holden have gone out of their way to alienate their loyal customers.

Although he does agree with the continued use of the Commodore name. I disagreed on that one with him.

It's not a question of might. I'm a commodore owner and looking at other brands for when the time comes to replace the mighty steed. Already looking at a Toyota 86. Plus I'm not the only one with this mindset as a small group of us are looking beyond the Lion and yellow bow-tie.

Intellectual property is a valuable thing to hold onto these days.

Stuff like patents, stuff like registered trademarks, stuff like registered designes can be worth something to someone if the interest is there..

For example, the actual brand name ‘Holden Motorsport’ might be just the kind of thing that a former local motor manufacturer, now importer might like to hang onto. Especially since it has a 30+ year connection to the Holden brand.

So... you have to wonder why the trademark ‘Holden Motorsport’ was cancelled back in 2012... no money to keep the trademark listing fees ticking?

There is the ASIC-registered business name ‘Holden Motorsport’ still wandering around too. A quick search at the places that do searches like that consider the business name ‘Holden Motorsport’ might be entrusted to a former media operative that ran their communications show for a looooooooong time until just recently...

Maybe 888 should buy the name for fun... their current role seems like Holden Motorsport anyway

Presuming any of this actually happened

I understand there was a bit of hoo-haa over a Facebook fan page of the same name, not too long ago. Cease and desist, and all of that.

The fanpage may have evolved from the 2017 edition of a Holden Motorsport official webpage, which seemed to become surplus to requirements when Holden, or 888, created a brand new page on FB and Insta from scratch earlier this year.

Too scared to talk to the person who owned it/the passwords to it

From what I gather, there wasn't previously a HMS FB page, therefore a fan created one.

Both of them are a pain, they seem to think it is their own little fiefdom so they can be king of the kids or I know something that you don't know etc, petty one upmanship is a good description. It is the reason a lot of people don't or no longer post here, if you don't follow the party line then you are the enemy. I haven't posted here for a long time and thought I would give it a go but nothing has changed at all.

Some (but not all) of the marketing / sales people really didn't seem up to the job or seemed to be major handbrakes to the business.

The changes seem to be about bringing back in people who know what they're doing, are focussed and have the confidence of the dealer network.

They've got a big job ahead of them, made bigger by some of the damage done over the last couple of years.
