If were to apply a Group C type formula for todays cars what rule changes (if any) do you see we would be needed. It would be interesting to see Modern Group C versions of classic racers of the 70's & 80's eg Commodore, Falcon, BMW, Jaguar....any others?

That is definitely at Pukekohe. At the end of the front straight turning into the elbow that led to the loop on the long circuit that hasn't been used for over 20 years. The event would be the 1984 Benson & Hedges 6 hour endurance race - won by the Neal Lowe/Kent Baigent BMW 635CSi.

Do you have any more photos of this event or other NZ touring car events pre 1985? If so, it would make a great thread in the Motorsport History part of ten-tenths.

Start of the 87 Nissan Mobil at Puke, check out the number of spectators on the hill, must be most of Auckland there?

I cant believe that Holden is so bloody stingy that their favourite son didnt get carted about on his last meeting in a V8? I wouldnt have hopped into the pile of crap if were him (thank the good lord above I am not) in fact I would have been pretty bloody insulted that I was going to be remembered as that V8 racer that got shuffled around in a 6 cylinder ute as a farewell. Tacky, Holden, Tacky.

Does anyone know what happened to the ute (VS?) that carried Brock on his original retirement? IIRC it was supplied by, or at least had stickers on it from Suttons Holden?

I will always remember the 6 hour races when they used the long circuit, boy some big problems with the hard left straight after the start. Be great to see any more classic NZ pics

Looks like it might have the Ghia-spec interior, judging by the interior door and armrest (with electric window section).

Interesting, I would'nt have thought they would have used the Ghia spec model, as it would be heavier with all the extra "mod cons" like electric everything etc...

There was an NZ XD race car featured in AMC (magazine) some time back, that for some particular homogolation reason was based on Fairmont/Fairmont Ghia spec.

Yes. In the 1970s/80s, cars that contested the long distance endurance races had to be assembled in New Zealand. The Fairmont XD 4.9 V8 was assembled in NZ and this was the car that was homologated for long distance racing. One such car won the 1981 Benson & Hedges 6-hour race at Pukekohe in the hands of Wayne Wilkinson/Neville Crichton.

Thanks for posting these. The bottom photo looks like it might be from the 1987 Benson & Hedges 500 at Pukekohe, the week after the WTCC Nissan Mobil 500 race at Pukekohe.
There is a very large field behind the Pinepac Mustangs. Yet the Corollas are right up there with them. This suggests that - although its hard to tell in the photo - that most of the cars down the back are NZ Production spec cars that joined in that race. There were about 20 Group A cars and another 20 NZ Production spec cars - things like the Cordia Turbo, Tredia Turbo, Commodore VL V8 (with automatic transmission if I remember).

I can remember the Nissan that ran with a vacuum cleaner on the top, would be interestng to see some old entry lists on who ran at some of these events. The 6 hour was one of my first memories of going to motorsport, big fields big crowds and simple formulas that the crowd felt like it was close to what they walked back to the car park and drove home. The cars nowdays are shortened and just arn't so close to the floor models. Also seeing things trim and electric windows is great for the arm chair fans.

Can anyone tell me what has happened to Mr Morton

Judging by the colourscheme of the Chris Hodgetts/Andrew Bagnell CHMS Corolla just behind the Mustang, this indicates it is the January Nissan-Mobil 500 race at Pukekohe, won by Larry Perkins & Denny Hulme, a week after the January Wellington 500 of 1987.

I'd say you're right. This website http://www.nzmustang.com/History/Racecars/pinepac1.htm has the same photo and says its the Nissan Mobil 500 round.
I was just surprised to see the Pinepac Mustangs so far down the grid. Or perhaps that should be, to see the Bagnell Corolla so far up the grid.

Based on the same Hodgetts-Corolla argument mentioned by racer69, I will agree that the picture is from January/February 1987 rather than October/November 1987. Both dates was Nissan Mobil 500 series races, right?
