Monaco GP 2015 Thread
several races into the 2015 season and the question which seems to be on everyone's mind is 'is there a reason to still watch F1?'
has the unequal distribution of money left too big of a gap between rich and poor, have the engineers engineered all the fun out of racing, have the drivers got it too easy within the cockpit, is this even sport anymore? well fortunately for us its time for Monaco GP and for me it could not have come at a better time. in order to successfully navigate this 3.34km track drivers and engineers will have to do something they dont usually have to do anymore in F1...compromise! as a track, F1 has long surpassed the confines of Monaco with its slow speed, tight corners, and complete lack runoff areas...but there in lies the magic of the place. F1 has to bring itself back in time to a simpler purer form of racing where out right speed and bullet proof reliability must be sacrificed for precision and control. limits must be respected and mistakes are not tolerated here under penalty of damage, injury, and sometimes worse! as a fan searching for reasons to watch this year, my hope is that Monaco can deliver the reminder we are all looking for. Nico Rosberg provided the entertainment last year with his actions during Q3. a post quali investigation by the stewards cleared him of any wrong doing meaning LH had to start the race behind his teammate on a track not known for overtaking. entering into the 2014 race, LH had a slight lead in the drivers title (3 points vs a 20 point lead this year), however, NR's victory here in 2014 lead to a revival of his title hunt leaving him with an 11 point lead by the end of the summer season. arriving with the first win of his season under his helmet, will NR be able to use his new found form and his (actual) home race as a springboard to bridge the gap between himself and his, incredibly well paid, team mate? perhaps more exciting though will be the battle for 3rd. Ferrari and Red Bull are the usual suspect for the final step but i suspect (well hoping) Torro Rosso might have something special to say about that come Sunday. despite having access to Merc power, Williams and Force India still seem lost in the woods. memories of a Mclaren-Honda making its way around the Principality is still fresh in many of our minds and with some possibilities of rain being mentioned Button and Alonso are just the kind of drivers who are capable of delivering their own kind of magic in such conditions. all in all this should be exactly the kind of weekend f1 needs to repair its image provided the powers that be dont shoot themselves in the foot along the way. enjoy the race as i know i will be! as is becoming my trademark (violation) here is a link to some rather useless facts presented by the BBC. im not sure why i need to know how many Lewis Hamiltons it takes to fill the Albert Hall but im sure glad the beeb are there to count them all. |

Very good performance by Toro Rosso again, especialy Max Verstappen who was the only driver who had never driven at this track before today.

The circuit has the swimming pool complex changed. The barriers have been moved back from the apex. It makes it a bit easier. Does anyone like it?

Is the thread title supposed to read Moanco, or it is supposed to read Moanaco as the drivers bemoan the track conditions in practice?

When I saw that group picture, I thought isn't that just
like Kimi, then I noticed your comment. I really miss his post race podium Q&A days. Hopefully he will get a podium this year. Question - what is the reason they don't do Friday on track at Monaco? I can't remember, which seems to happen more and more. |

sometimes unintentional mistakes are the best kinds!
but Memorial day, an american holiday, always falls on the last monday of may not on the friday. its a good question though. i had always assumed (not based on any facts) it was done to not inconvenience all the rich people driving in for the weekend. instead of the roads being closed for 3 days in row they break it up. really have no idea though. |

The real race starts tomorrow with Monaco qualifying.
I would like to see Rosberg get poll and a win this weekend. Hamilton did not do to bad with a new contract worth a rumored $50 mil / year for 3 more years. Pretty good for an 8 year old kart racer at Rye House Kart Raceway from back in the day. |

Here's an interesting take from Monaco resident JV, former Indy 500 winner, CART Driver's Champion and WDC on the race.

I was really hoping Rosberg would get pole, just for a change but he messed up the first sector in Q3 and Lulu gets pole, again.

Poor ol Alonso, " I will start 15th and that's where I will finish ".
So I am for Alonso to just get some points. Hope tv shows it. Here's hoping for a bit of safe Monaco race drama. I really don't care if there is not a change in classification. Its just amazing seeing this amazing combination of driver, machinery, speed, and armco. |

I call BS on that infographic.
"A new born Monaco resident could expect to live through 1,700 Grands Prix". Oh, wait - 1,700 in total, not just at Monaco I guess. Useful statistic to know. In other news - I watched the Formula E race recently and I couldn't figure out why they weren't showing the tunnel. Then I clued in... shortened circuit. Jeez. What's the point of racing in Monaco if you don't use the whole layout? [yes yes I know, there are compelling safety and lap distance reasons, blah blah blah] |

For your first point, if you assumed 20 years x 85 years, this gives 1700 GP. How old is Bernie? |

Useless information,Bernie actually drove an F1 car in the 1958 Monaco GP but failed to qualify for the race.

A rather uneventful start, though Hulkenberg got put into the barrier by Alonso at Mirabeau, who is now under investigation by the stewards.
I liked those aerial shots during the parade lap. |

Sooner or later Nico needs to try a different line
instead of going for the Ferrari block at the start. Race might be over at the front, but my goodness, it is awesome mid pack. |
