Coulthard quicker than Kimi in private test
David Coulthatd outpaced Kimi Raikkonen today in a private test at Valencia. Relevant or just testing doing it's usual stuff??

I see you've been sucked in by the Autosport headline!
It was less than two-tenths of a second difference and they were both doing long runs - not going for quick laps. |

Welcome to ten-tenths graves.
There is another thread about this test. http://tentenths.com/forum/showthrea...threadid=50322 (concerning the reliability of the McLaren). Anyway, back to DC and Kimi. Did it compare the stint times? It would be interesting to see who was quicker over ten laps (or maybe 70 laps if possible). Here is a link to the Autosport article: http://tentenths.com/forum/showthrea...threadid=50322 |

No mention of stint times. Still early days too I suppose.

Doesn't mean anything. Kimi still holds the fastest time of the McLaren drivers so far this off season iirc.

IMO testing doesn't mean anything.

It was MORE than two tenths, over 2 1/4 tenths. 10.072 minus 9.844 is 2.28...

1. Testing times that are that close really do mean very little. We don't know what settings they were on or, as previously suggested, what their stints were like.
2. It wouldn't be that surprising! I know most people don't rate DC that highly, but he is a good driver and there were days last year when he was as quick/quicker than Kimi. |

Quite true krt. DC is a hell of a lot better than most people give him credit for. At least he gets a much fairer ride here than at the Ferrari-supporting forums on A***SF1.

You're both right, but he's never gonna do IT is he??
He's just not consistant enough. |

No, I'd be very surprised if DC was to do it. I think he was, from a drivers point of view, close to it in 2001, but had the car let him down too often.
DC is not a great driver, but he is a very good one and I do wonder what will happen to McLaren's car development when he finally does leave. |

DC is very consistent when it comes to race pace though.
On the subject of car development - I don't think Ron would be letting him go if he thought there would be a problem there. |

No, that's probably true. I do wonder what Newey thinks though. He wasn't best pleased when Williams got rid of Hill and I see DC now in a similar light in that respect (though probably not quite as good).
And yes, his race pace is good. And I for one think that that is more important, it's just a bit too difficult these days to make up for a poor(ish) grid position. |

DC is driving for his F1 life this season, so I would be quite surprised if he didn't come out ahead of Kimi once in awhile.
When you really look at it, Kimi has no pressure on him. He knows he's staying at Mclaren, unless he really muffs it. He's the future for Mac. DC's race pace is good, its the one lap qualifying he needs to work on. If that comes along, than DC will be a driver to be reckoned with. He should be driving like his life depended on it, and it does! |

It is testing so doesn't mean much. Though wasn't Coulthard quicker than Kimi in the Suzuka race last season? (even though Kimi finished ahead)

Coulthard outqualified Kimi six times last season and put in some strong drives so it's probably fair to say he was quicker a thrid of the time... DC can be just as good, if not better than Kimi when it suits. It's just a case of getting some consistency.

So for one lap DC was faster.Kimi must have been on a in or out lap.
