Don't forget he was an occasional Ten Tenther too.
He certainly guaranteed action by the bucketful (to quote Murray Walker)

Gosh! Off the radar more recently but still on there - if only asking "what happened to?"

Best wishes to Sarah Greene. I can't believe what she must be going through,

In terms of a "proper" racing celebrity Mike Smith seemed to offer some genuine, quite consistent, competitive ability without being an obvious all time racing superstar.

59 is too young to exit the general and widespread talent pool.

Sad news indeed, a tidy racer and the man that introduced Noel Edmonds to motor racing. Sadly Noel stuffed Mike's Ford Escort into the sleepers at Clearways writing off the Escort in the process.
I seem to recall Mike's father was top man at Ford and had some involvement with rallycross?

Like many on here, Mike was an ever present feature of my teens on TV and radio during the 1980s. His exploits behind the wheel of a touring car added an extra dimension to our interest in him. He always seemed to be a genuinely nice guy, borne out by his contributions to 10-10ths - see here.

Yes, his dad used to work in marketing at Ford in Warley, Essex.

Really sad news this evening. My thoughts are with Sarah and his family.

Just thinking of those who have died this year just like that young or relatively young. John Button, Roger Lloyd Pack, Peaches Geldof, Rik Mayall and now Mike Smith. Sad times.

Very sad news indeed. He was a tenther and indeed I followed him on twitter. He kept us informed of Will Hoy's condition up to his sad end. I never met him but those that did say he was a good bloke. Most of us just know him from the tv and radio. RIP Mike. Condolences to Sarah Greene.

Sad News.....I remember his fraught battles with Frank Sytner in BTCC BMW's.

Also Mike visited Castle Combe, presenting trophies to drivers.

My thoughts with Sarah and family.
