Is it today or later on in the week that the first official DTM test of the season begins at Mugello?

* Green and Margaritis have 2004 car and Paffett and Häkkinen drove the new Mercedes.

Surely a little worrying for Merc, slower than last years car?

Turns out this may not be true after all. Some cars are interim car (carrying testing parts).

I think we will know more during the testing days in Spa. There Audi will show up with its 2005 version

I was told that the Merc GP and MH were in was the finished '05 car. In that case you would at least be expecting GP in an '05 Merc to be matching the times of Frentzen in the '05 Opel.

Could Opel shock everyone and actually compete with the Audi's and Merc's or am i jumping to conclusions a little early?

Its too early yet. Lets wait until the later testing when Audi and Mercedes have their proper 05' cars.

I hope Opel does well this year, even better if they win the championship? If they do really well or win, would Opel consider changing their minds and stay with the Opel after '06? It's way too early for '06 speculation, but I wonder if any privateers or existing teams would continue racing the '05 spec Vectra in '06?

I've been in Mugello, following the tests for www.racingworld.it.
You can find the articles here (in italian only, sorry) http://www.racingworld.it/dtm/

And some photographs here
http://www.racingworld.it/dtm/photo0...03_mugello.asp

All i can say it's that the 05 Mercedes, driven by Paffett and Alesi, sounds incredible, and 'm pretty sure it isn't only a matter of exhausts, there must be something new in the engine.
Trust me, no one is pushing, maybe only Frentzen is, the teams were using new tires only in the last 30 minutes of each session.
Anyway the Vectra seems to behave really better comparing to last year, Mugello is a difficult circuit for a car, you have climbs and dives, and Opel showed a really good balance. I hope for them that they'll manage to compete for the title...

It seems MB/Audi are finally flexing their muscle and stretching their legs a little bit now?

The third day of testings has seen Opel been toppled off the top 3 spots??

3 Frank Stippler Audi A4 1:44.283
4 Pierre Kaffer Audi A4 1:44.364
5 Heinz-Harald Frentzen Opel Vectra 1:44.702
6 Christian Abt Audi A4 1:44.727
7 Rinaldo Capello Audi A4 1:44.777
8 Jean Alesi Mercedes C-Class 1:44.962
9 Manuel Reuter Opel Vectra 1:45.527

But as you can see, no one beated Frentzen's 1.43.2, time that he made on the second day. It's a goord time, Dindo Capello told me that if he was going to put on new tires and run for a qualifying lap i could have done, with his Audi 2004, a 1.42.8-9, so you can see that Opel is running good.
They are working a lot, I hope they will have a pay-back

I'm on your side!! I hope Opel really give Audi/MB a run for their money. But can Frenzen keep up the pace throughout a race and not just for a few short laps!!

The new Audi should be a great improvement, but they are really late with the building of the cars, and dunno if they'll be in Spa with all four A4.
In any case they won't be at 100% in Hockenheim, i'm pretty sure about this.
For the race pace all i can say is that when Frentzen tried a run on 10 laps, he lapped constantly on 1.46.xxx, a time that seemed in line with the potential of other cars.
Anyway I'm expecting great things from Mercedes, you really can't imagine the potential that their test car seem to have...
