Or headline writers who need to be a little more careful?

"David Coulthard raced at Sunday's Spanish Grand Prix with three cracked ribs following a fatal plane crash, his McLaren team said on Wednesday."

Not everyone could come in second in a race after being killed....

I missed those three cracked ribs. Where were they on the grid?

Liz, it was a fatal plane crash because it killed two people. It didn't say that Coulthard had been killed. I didn't know it was three broken ribs!

One of the things they taught us in English class was to avoid implied meanings in our statements. Obviously DC is still alive to finish second in the race, but the statement should have noted who the fatalities were.

It just struck me odd. DC is a brave man and very much alive, but you have to wonder if someone who didn't know he hadn't been killed might get a shock from reading that.

This is why I want to give credit to Norwegian teletext, where I first read about the plane crash. Their headline was "Coulthard survived plane crash" (in Norwegian of course). They could have easily made it sound a lot worse by using the headline "Coulthard in fatal plane crash", which would also have been correct, but would have given you one hell of a shock before reading the rest of it. Media has a big responsibility in giving the right impression in their headlines, and not just speculate and write sensational ones.
