Ferrari 550 in Le Mans speed shocker

I was watching highlights of Le Mans on Eurosport this afternoon and the commentators said something which I find hard to believe.

They said that the Ferrari 550 Maranello of Enge, Rydell and Menu at one point was fastest outright through the speed trap on the Mulsanne Straight. If this is true, for a GTS class car to beat some of the top LMP cars such as the Audi, Dallara, Dome, MG etc on top speed really is a superb achievement, the only shame is that they failed to win GTS after running so strongly early on in the race.

It was a shame that it didn't finish, but it showed the reason it was well over 2 laps ahead of the GTS field.

I think they did brilliantly and I also think they survived much longer than many expected.

Don't recall them having many problems whilst they were out there but it was a shame that they couldn't finish it off.

Hopefully we'll see them back again next year!

Oh and as for that top speed, pretty awesome!!

Speed was pretty good, but the noise it made was fantastic.

It's a Prodrive car at the end of the day, usually the best out there.

I think I heard Radio Le Mans comment that the R8 was far from being the fastest car through the speed trap. Last year one of the drivers commented that Audi were giving up straight line speed for cornering. I think this year the Courages were faster in the speed traps than the Audis, can anyone confirm this?

The Audis certainly looked super-smooth in the corners, as they have for the last three years!

On eurosport, they said the Audi was the slowest LMP 900 car through the traps, while the Dome Judd was the fastest 900 car. It seems to me that Audi have built a car for Le Mans which is why they are so good there but aren't as far ahead elsewhere in the ALMS.

The 550 may have been the fastest GT there, but before it can win it needs to improve its MPG stopping 2 laps before the vettes is not the way to go.

The 550 definately looked and sounded fantastic, lets hope its back again next year. The 360's however seemed a bit lame, both slow and unreliable. A bit dissappointing for me, however it was nice to see some other cars in the slowest category, and well done to the Morgan for a strong showing.
