That was a bad stop for Dixon.

What a great overtake by Montoya on the restart and another debris caution. I wonder about those box winglets on the Honda aero-kits.

Bourdais is happy to see the yellow - he was getting swamped.

These aero kits are the most ridiculous things, only people that benefit from running them are those who make the parts.

Only one incident with the Chevy front wing and a number with the Honda front wing, 4 just with Andretti alone. |

Congrats to J.P. Montoya, just got the better of Power in the pitstops and on the track. I forgot what a long race St. Pete could be.

As the season opener, I thought that was a bit of a mixed bag. Everyone started a little bit on tenterhooks and the racing never really got underway, with all those caution periods, mainly caused by the problem with Honda's front wing. That's something they'll really need to consider, as I can see it becoming a problem in future races.
When the racing finally got underway, with 20 odd laps to go, it was a battle between Penske 1 and Penske 2. |

Hunter-Reay's car still looked ridiculous - to my eyes at least. I think everyone else though shaped their livery around the winglets fairly well and they looked convincing enough. In fact the cars, in anger, generally didn't look radically different to the way they looked last year - just more armour I suppose.
The issue is that all these winglets are quite toxic to overtaking and are clearly prone to breaking off and intensifying the number of caution flags that arise. It was an adequate race but the racing does limp a bit because of these kind of issues. Congratulations to JPM anyhoo - he wasn't fancied for the win and did well at the end there. Good to see it wasn't a Penske 4 car lock-out at the race results as well. |

A good race for mine.
Pity Power got held up behind Karam and broke his run. Seemed a pretty good crowd from the overhead shots as well. Not a bad place to start the season. |

Jack Hawksworth did better than I thought, a creditable 8th.

Will Marco Andretti ever be fast on a road course like his old man was
Great drive by the #2 & #1 Penske boys - cars are fugly with all the over the top wings on them, Reynards & Lola's from the 90's still crap all over the Dallara's! |

Honda and Chevrolet substantially re-designed the cars this year...also, they're actually 200lbs lighter than the CART Reynards were (similar weight to F1 cars now) and more aero-efficient. Let them use more boost (especially on ovals) and we're set, IMO. |

What a final with the fight between the great Montoya and Power.....many risks for Penske but fortunately 1-2 at the end
Kanaan broke the 1-2-3-4 Penske, great perfomance and a good race also for Filippi i would say |

Let me tell you that the first 80-85 laps of the race it was a big snooze-fest. As I sipped wine watching the procession, the thoughts started to climb into my mind that at some point I might stop watching some or all races. The only hilarious highlight was that almost all safety car periods up to that point were caused by the extravagant but also amateurish looking aero parts falling off the cars. At this point, I kind of entertained the debate about whether the parts are falling off because IndyCar drivers simply do not have a finesse in close racing or may be they all got out of shape during a half year long break. The aero parts also looked kind of ridiculous, something that may come out of a community college CAD class final project.
Anyways, about 23-21 laps before the end, Montoya gets in front of Will Power. The interesting stuff begins. And then what happens? About 10 minutes of commercials. This is when lapping the track takes about 1 minute. So at least one third of the truly interesting racing was replaced by commercials. That's SHOCKING ****. You'd think that they'd let us see at least the final 10 minutes of racing undisturbed. Forget it! The commercial free TV returned about at 6 or so laps before the end, and past the point where Power and Montoya cars touched. Why should I keep watching this sort of inept reporting on screen? A Sunday is too short to squeeze IndyCar in between of watching Formula 1 and Walking Dead. |

The number of commercials was insane. Shredded the broadcast completely.
