Race to the Sky Back in 2015

On Speedcafe I see that Race To The Sky is being reincarnated for 2015.
Good to see iconic events making a return.
It's on April 15th to 19th 2015 at Cardrona.
Being promoted as the longest gravel Hill Climb in the world.
It will be good to see everyone get behind it.
I wonder what type of things will compete, and how much it will cost to enter or spectate.

Great news, such a cool event. Is it the same track as was originally used? I see Monster Tajima is already signed up. Look forward to seeing what else shows up, i'm guessing there won't be a lot of crossover with cars from Pikes Peak with that being all sealed now.

Has anyone heard who will be at the shiny end of the competitor list for this yet.
Heard Monster will be there, but who else.

i believe the Aussie buggies (Heyward ?/ Riley ? ) are coming.
no doubt Lino will have something up his sleeve

Hopefully Rhys Millen is keen to give it a crack in something Hyundai backed. His Pikes Peak entries are always impressive. Or how about that Peugot? Adapt that to gravel, what a beast!

Sloan Cox has the Hawkeswood spaceframe Evo. The car is to undergo some tweaks.

Isnt this event supposed to be on the same weekend as the FIA Asia Pacific Rally Championship in Whangarei?

Just checked the dates and it is the same weekend. Been to the rally a few times, so I might take in the Race to the Sky. Be nice to know how many quality entries they have before booking.

Surely that can't happen.

Hillclimb will need to change. Can't really have both events on same weekend. There will be a huge conflict with all parties, spectators, competitors, media coverage, etc

FIA championship event must take precedence.

Far enough out for this to happen and respective organisers to be advised.

Looks like Motorsport NZ gave Race to the Sky the go ahead mid August.
They had the RTS announcement on their website on 14th August 2014.
The APRC announcement much later in Mid September.
At least they are at different ends of the country, so shouldn't have much bearing on things. Maybe some competitors will need to choose where they go.

Well thats all good and well now but do we want NZRC competitors having to choose between the events when MSNZ and RNZ promote and push the NZRC as our top tier rally series? They spend 100s of thousands of dollars in making this happen at ground level and TV level, It just doesnt make sense.

Maybe you should consider that perhaps the news release may have happened prior to any application for a date approval. Sometimes even in the best of worlds this can happen .

Knowing a wee bit about that part of the countryside I certainly would not like to be up on the hill anytime later than Easter weekend unless I was equipped for very cold conditions for even then it can be quite perishing.

At 1500 plus metres there sure is a wind chill factor to consider.

A few pics of Tony Quinn's "Race to the Sky' car that is being constructed by Pace Innovation have been posted on FB.
'Aero package' Carbon fibre clad space frame, looks like it will be 850hp (depending on boost) front engine VR 38
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nissan_VR_engine , 4 wheel drive, via an R35 drivetrain?

Personally I am looking forward to attending Race to the Sky this year with a few of my non motorsport following buddies. You would never get them to a circuit watching a few V8s and SsangYongs etc.

But when you have some awesome cars flying up a hill, and maybe some quads, bikes and trucks too, they were keen!

Grew up watching this on TV, so will be cool to see it, and some wild creations/rally cars in the flesh! Shame the MC2 wont be there?

The MC2 would be a shade off the turbo cars at altitude.
Be interesting to see how the road has changed in the past 14 years.

I have read TV3 have a 'Race to the Sky' highlights program planned for Sunday May 10th which is 'Mother's Day'.

Highlands are likely to update times etc on their fb page and other media.

Tajima and A McRae.

Is there a memorial to Possum anywhere along the route?

Will there be any ceremony to mark his passing?
