Andrea de Cesaris
Italian media reporting that ex-F1 driver of some repute, scorer of Jordan Grand Prix's first points, MSC's first teammate in F1 and the youngest polesitter in F1 history for a while thanks to Long Beach '82, Andrea de Cesaris, has died today after a motorbike crash outside Rome. Mainstream media starting to pick up on the story now, it's all over Twitter at the moment.

Sad news. He had the de Crasheris tag and the rich boy tag, but he was not without talent, a bit like Maldonado. The ironic thing was despite his reputation, it was only bad luck that robbed him when he could have won, as in Zolder 82, Monaco 82, Spa 83 and Spa 91.
When he joined Jordan he matured for good and finally saw the real him. RIP AdC |

I was staggered by this news. A superb driver when F1 was still F1. RIP.

Despite, or possibly because of, all the vitriol he used to get back in the day, Andrea de Cesaris was a true hero of mine. He won the Junior World Karting Championship and then followed it up with the 100cc World Karting Championship... a little over a year later with the aid of his dad's Marlboro money he was behind the wheel of a Formula One car. He showed flashes of the utter brilliance that took him to his karting crowns but more often than not drove his F1 cars exactly as he used to drive his karts. Had he been cocooned in something like a Red Bull driver programme of today, he undoubtedly would have delivered so much more than he did. He really was an incredible talent.
His passing is a such a sad loss... but here's how I'll remember him, driving the wheels off an unreliable Alfa Romeo in 1983 - the same place where 8 years later he came within a whisker of a sensational victory in the Jordan. RIP Andrea |
