My parents were up there for the event, and reckon it was an unbelievable weekend of hillclimbing.

Gary West from WA in his Lola got up on the 6th and final run of the weekend after missing Saturdays competition with gearbox issues.

Martin Groves was leading coming into the final round, from team owner Andrew Howell and multiple times Aussie Champ Peter Gumley in his SCV. Gumley had broken his old record on Saturday by half a second, but could not keep up with the Lola or the reported AU$400,000 Gould.

Hey all!
I am a pretty big Hillclimb fan in Oz and round 3 of the Victorian Hillclimb Championship was held last weekend at Phillip Island GP Circuit (MotoGP and WSB). Andrew Howell the owner of the Gould GR55B in Oz won it by 9 seconds from of all things a 250cc Superkart and Kevin Mackrell's Datsun 260Z with a 6litre Chevrolet and 4wd. Anyway Howell managed to reach a top speed of 260km/h (161mph) when he ran out of gearing! Unfortunately they only got 3 runs and it was raining for the last one so fastest times were the 2nd run.

Top 3 times:
Andrew Howell - Gould GR55B - 50.96 seconds
Greg Bass - Stockman Superkart - 59.64
Kevin Mackrell - Datsun 660Z - 60.25

Can anyone tell me what sort of weight the Gould would be and perhaps some of the technical things of the GR55B? Im very curious. He has been doing lots of demo runs to show us all what Hillclimbing is really like over in the UK!

That's who actually make them.

I'm not sure about the weight of them. IIRC somebody mentioned a figure between 400-500Kg all up. That sounds about right based on the weight of LMP1 & 2 cars (975Kg & 675Kg respectively) which have more kit, bodywork & a much larger fuel tank. Obviously, most constructors are a bit cagey about the exact weights.

I spoke with Rob Turnbull soon after he traded in his GR37 for his GR55. He reckoned the biggest difference was you could acually feel how much lower the C of G was because of the improved installation position of the engine.

I think a F1 car is about 540kgs, has approx 50hp more, but cannot not run as much aero or use slicks.

Therefore a hillclimb car is the next fastest accelerating thing to a dragster, which itself is only slower than a rocket car.

Just note the figures on the Channel 4 website are (a) from 2005, and (b) were totally out of date when published!

Top speed over the line at Aintree for ex-F3000 car is 182 mph.

The look on the Groves/english crew after the "underbudgeted" battler
in the old F3000 Gary West blew them away on the last run was priceless for everything else.........
I supose if Gumley in a "combi" engine 1970 car had been able to contine his record breaking early times it would have been a giggle!
The best thing is that every one enjoyed matching/breaking Groves combo times and it has send the boys away to improve their old cars!!!

Don't underestimate the Oz cars. I am sure Martin and David don't.

Bathurst is our fastest hill and most typical hills are rough surfaces and low speed. U.K. hills appear to be much higher speeds. Phillip Island would suit the Gould.

Mt Cotton is completly different to Bathurst and the Gary West Lola and the Gould will find it a struggle against the SCV.

The SCV would struggle on U.K. hills in its current form, but given 12 months to sort it out, it would be an outright contender against the more fancied marques.
