its an unfortunate title but I am sure his Lordship will put on a beautiful spectacle - certainly more accessable than Johnny Bute's one which sadly was just too far North

Simon, Cholmondeley is a wonderful old name and not unknown in motor racing circles. Have you never read 'Amateur Racing Driver' by T.P Cholmondeley Tapper, writing of his own experiences in pre war racing in Maseratis, Alfa Monzas and Bugattis, and the like, don't you know, old boy. Haven't read it for years, but a good read if I recall. I bet your master, JR, has heard of him!

I was referring to the current chumley's more artistic bent.... but you are right - pre war is moe my mentor's comfort zone ;o)
however old power boats do have attraction...

Yes it was truly wonderful. Not a plummy voiced public schoolboy from anywhere south of Shap in sight.

an unusual comment - however am I not right in observing that his Lordship's previous trademark Sarf London accent is somewhat more true to his roots now he has elevated from Dumfries to Bute?
Must be his move back North.....

I wonder if there are too many historic events about?
They are one of the few forms of motorsport that now attract a substantial crowd but do we have too many "commercial" groups jumping on the bandwagon in order to enrich themselves?
Those with interesting cars now have a great choice of where to go and no doubt there is a certain amount of "help" given for turning out.
Certainly some race meetings have not lived up to expectations in terms of entry numbers, the more modern GP series seem to be the worst, no doubt due to the difficulty of keeping the cars going.
The Knockhill Classic Festival was quite dreadful this year with only the local historic series supplemented by Ferraris, FFs and those terrible tin boxes called Legends. It seems that the circuit had great difficulty in getting series to travel north.
Now we have stately homes jumping on the "Goodwood" bandwagon, not only "Chumley" but later in the month the Culzean Autoclassica near Ayrand at a less commercial level the Bo'ness Revival Hill Climb. Can they all produce what they promise for the fairly considerable entrance fee?

Cholmondeley Pageant of Power

Who's going?

I'm looking forward to this- I drove a car at the press day before the upgrades to the course were completed and it looks like it's going to be very quick indeed. I'm making an overnight dash back from the 'Ring after Friday's Marathon.

I'm down to marshal at this on the saturday, got my tickets and car pass through this morning.
Looking forward to it as I've been to the castle once a year for the last 5 for their classical music concert and the ground are nice.

Steve Wilkinson is a back marker

Above: Ash Mason in his Pilbeam-Vauxhall MP62 on what will be the Start Line

The picture above was taken when the track was tested by Ash Mason & Steve Day who brought along their hillclimbing Pilbeam. The two drivers were impressed with the track and Ash, who works for Bentley, was able to gather a lot of set-up data for transferring to the Speed 8 which Derek Bell will be driving.

A grand day out - FoS Oop North!

Best cars of the day were the Napier Bentley, GN-JAP and Thunderbug - really going for it. I know the Napier and its engine were only united in the 70s (?) but is THunderbug a "modern" creation too?
