JTBK should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Your favourite driver from the generations

F1's seen a lot of memorable drivers in the past, question is, who's your favourite from each generation?

1950's:

1960's:

1970's:

1980's:

1990's:

Modern day:

BTW there's probably been a thread on this before but I've only just discovered the F1 forum so.....etc, etc....

I guess that was for the 50's VB, what about since then?

Its very hard to put the into these specific time frames but here's my list:
  • 1950's: The one and only - Fangio (Moss a close second)
  • 1960's: Sir Jack Brabham (The only man to win the WDC in his own car - Challenge to current drivers)
  • 1970's: Stewart (I know he's more 60's but what do ya do)
  • 1980's: Prost
  • 1990's: Senna
  • Modern day: Michael Schumacher
What can I say, everyone loves a winner

You know, I have never written about this, but I was at the British GP at Brands, and actually cheered for James Hunt, and when he was disqualified after a great race, I was furious. I did not care for Niki Lauda winning the race as a result. However, I was stunned later on when I read about Niki's accident at Nurnburgring, and when I read how serious his injuries were, and how he bravely raced at Monza - how after the race, they removed his head gear and it was covered with blood, Niki has been my all time hero in life. In later years, when ever I found any great difficulties in my sailing, I found my inspiration in Niki. I don't care what they say about his statements these days, he is still my all time hero. If ever there was anyone that I just want to meet, it would be Niki, and I would just love to shake hands with him.

Yes Valve for a guy of small stature, Niki is really larger than life.

Appart from the accident, he was very competitive over a fair period of time. At a time when the odds of dying were higher and becoming old in the sport seemed less of a career option.

EERO, I'm amazed at how similar your list is to my faves. Add Graham Hill and Bandini in the 60's, Depailler and Watson in the 70's, Villeneuve in the 80's and Alesi in the 90's and modern days.

Angst, add Mike the Bike and Andretti to my 70's list. Graham Hill absolutely!

I'd add Alboreto and Boutsen from the 80's and Frentzen and Coulthard from today's batch.

Lovely topic. Favourite is always so much less contentious than best. If you don't mind - I'd just like to extend the parameters a bit....

pre-war - Rudolf Caracciola, B Bira

40's - Emanuel de Graffenreid

50's - Stirling Moss

60's - Graham Hill, Dan Gurney

70's - Jackie Stewart, Jacques Laffite, Alan Jones

80's - Keke Rosberg, Stefan Bellof

90's - Rubens Barrichello, Jean Alesi

today - difficult to say - we don't really know them well enough!

Well if we're having other favourites besides our no.1's...

1990's: Alesi, Frentzen, Gene, Salo.

00's: Alesi, Frentzen, Alonso, Gene.

Hmmm... somewhat similar...

1950's: Jean Behra

1960's: Clark, Brabham and G. Hill

1970's: Gilles, Peterson, Hunt, Laffite (nice guys do finish first)

1980's: Gilles, Laffite (remember him leading in Detroit 1986, bloody marvellous), Mansell, Berger, Martini (you know, that Minardi driver)

1990's: Mansell, Gachot, Hakkinen, Martini, Alesi

2000 and beyond: Hakkinen, Alonso (for the fact he drives a MINARDI!! and does a bloody good job too), JPM, Trulli

To be honest, there aren't many drivers I dislike. However:

Dislikes:

David Coulthard, Jean-Marie Balestre, Bernie Ecclestone, Ron Dennis, Jenson Button (one of the most hyped-up, over-rated drivers I have ever heard of), Carlos Reutemann, Nelson Piquet, Jean Todt, Didier Pironi (not that I dislike him as a driver, but I do blame him for a part of Gilles death. If he hadn't robbed him of the win at Imola, I doubt Gilles would have died. But who knows??)

Man, how can you say that?

Maybe if Gilles would have went out half a second later he wouldn't have died.

The world is full of maybes

True mate, but many observers, and even the great Enzo did place part of the blame at the feet of Pironi because one maybe is if Pironi had not robbed Gilles of victory in Imola he might not have gone out on that lap, been so furious etc etc and been killed.

But their are many variables on what may have happened. I accept you argument about that. Cheers.
