Sally Hingston - RIP

I was shocked to read in the Daily Mail that a Silverstone marshal (Sally) was murdered in the week, can't see anything on here about this, is this terrible news true?

Sadly true...

Sally Hingston was out walking
Friday August 7,2009
By Martyn Brown The naked body of a missing housewife was found in a field yesterday near her country home in an idyllic village once used as the setting for ITV’s Midsomer Murders.

Sally Hingston, 67, vanished on Thursday morning after kissing her husband Reg goodbye at their home.

The mother-of-two, who was described as a “pillar of local society”, then set off for a walk on one of her two usual routes.

She failed to return home, the alarm was raised and a police hunt using a helicopter, mounted police and tracker dogs was started.

Searchers found her body two miles outside the tiny Buckinghamshire village of Gawcott yesterday and a Home Office pathologist was called to the scene.

Last night a 25-year-old man was under arrest on suspicion of murder following the discovery.

A police tape cordon surrounded the bungalow the man shared with his father in Gawcott. Mr Hingston, a former RAF Engineer, and the couple’s two sons, Bruce and Roy, were said to be devastated over Mrs Hingston’s death.

A police guard remained at their home as night fell.

Petite Mrs Hingston, a retired motor racing marshal at the Silverstone circuit, was last seen alive at 7.20am on Thursday when she passed Windbush Farm in the village. She was wearing a distinctive bright blue and yellow racing-style jacket.

News of the death has shocked the close-knit community.

A local barmaid said: “I felt sick when I heard the news. It literally sent a shiver down my spine. You never think something like this would happen in a place like Gawcott.”

Another villager said that Mr and Mrs Hingston had been living in the picture-postcard village for the past 30 years.

I was working with Sally on the Startline last Saturday and was looking forward to doing the same next weekend... This is a big shock. Our thoughts and prayers must be for her family, close friends and neighbours.

So she was she a startline marshal then? I thought I recognised her picture. I am sure she came over and had a chat to me at the Walter Hayes last year when I was lining up with my Camaro and she told me how much she liked my car and her son loved cars like mine. She was also very symphathetic when I lined up in the race with a much more bent car. If it was the same lady she seemed a very nice and jolly person and I am even more gutted now.

I've known Sally as a Startline and Assembly Area marshal but I've just read elsewhere that she used to do breakdown. No doubt a great many drivers will have encountered her over the years.

We heard the tragic news last night and were completely lost for words. Having seen her in the racing club only last Saturday this is completely unbelievable.

Sally spent many years as crew on the Silverstone breakdown unit that used to be stationed at Becketts on the National circuit and more recently moved onto startline when the unit retired.

She was a lovely lady and this is an absolutely appalling thing to have happened.

Rest Well Sally, we'll miss your smile and cheerful outlook.

A wonderful, lovely lady who always had a smile on her face. We've known Sally from her days on the recover unit as well as her more recent time on the start line. It was only at the CSCC meeting last weekend that we last spoke. Shellshocked that this could happen, our thoughts are with Sally and her family. She will be sorely missed. Mark and Mandy

Sally was a lovely lady - on the times we met working startline she had many interesting tales of Silverstone and the drivers she had met in the past.
My thoughts go out to her family

It was a pleasure to have known Sally

I'm so sorry not to have posted anything sooner. It was shocking news which I'm still taking in. One of my Silverstone startline colleagues, Sally was a cheerful person and always had a smile on her face. So very sad to think we'll never see her again.
My sincere condolences to her family and friends.

What a shock and an absolute tragedy - as you've all remarked already, Sally was a lovely, warm/friendly and very smiley lady - it was always a pleasure to bump into her at the circuit.

My most sincere condolences to her husband and sons.

This is absolutely terrible news. Sally was a gem of a lady who took me under her wing for part of my first day a couple of years ago. Although I have only done startline a few times since, she would always stop for a quick chat and ask how I was getting on.

I am shocked and can’t imagine what her family and friends are going through at this awful time. My thoughts are with them.

I was appalled and saddened to hear the news about Sally on Saturday and especially when I saw her name on the sign on sheet for the BDC at Silverstone .
A lovely bright sparkly person I have had the pleasure of working with Sally over the recent past at various meetings at Silverstone and was always caring and considerate with her colleagues .
She will be missed both as a key member of the startline team and the bright star that always shone when she was around.
RIP Sally.
