I was amazed by the rake on the 935 - were they that much in period or is that a modern development or indeed just the angle of the photo?

Look pretty much as they were, I think, Simon.

Love Roger's Team Gunston B26. Should be in HSCC Martini series?

Yes, the 935s look like.... 935s to me.

Although hardly a car there I wouldn't want to own think the Gp5 BMW would have to be top of the list. Along with the Gp5 Zakspeed Turbo Capris and Escorts, got to be the ultimate incarnation of 'touring cars'.

Well the Zakspeed Capris are pretty rare. IIRC only one or two of each were made.

I think there were more beemers. The Warsteiner Ronnie Petersen version springs to mind.

Simon I am no expert on Porkers but were there not different body shapes and aerodynamics depending on season, circuit etc? The Fitzpatrick car is very different and looks like a long tailed car configured for top speed........

try this one which is short tail - It just looks very different to the blue one at Silverstone... I am no expert either and I am sure pit wall experts like john Ruston will shoot me down for my stupidity but it looks very different, are the rear wheels too big?

In this case you have a point.

They raced the cars for years so the machines that are now used are to the final evolution plus the usual new bits that's call development!

I am not interested in much beyond 74 when I gave up being involved in racing so am no expert.Need a Porker man rather than a porky man.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porsche_935

I quick read through did not suggest any comments about changing the rake of the screen and so on though no doubt the rulaes for certain series or events at certain times may have permitted such a change.

However it it is clear that the targets (of the race series' and the Porsche engineers and the independent teams using the customer cars) were constantly moving - which observations thus complement JR's comments.

Rake? Try 'attitude' Simon. The car you are discussing does indeed look a bit 'jacked up' at the rear for some reason compared with period shots posted.

I'm not saying it is related, but looking closely different bodywork again on the last pic.

Ah, OK.

I've always thought of 'rake' being used as an adjective for windscreens - some distant input from waaay back I suppose and no doubt inaccurately restrictive.

That said I have a vague recollection about reading something that mention subtle changes in the windscreen layouts which would also have changed the body shape of the roof line and rear.

The Wiki article mentions early rule changes that forced the use of a 'standard' tailgate shape suggesting that there were mods early in period. The aero configuration is different but then that was changed several times it seems and by different teams. Also the Fitzpatrick photo shows full length side panels that fill the door space between the wheel arches.

I would imagine that anyone wishing to create a unique spec to differentiate their car from any other would not have too much of a problem finding a variant that does not currently appear in public.

I seem to remember early 935s being 'jacked up' at the back. IIRC from the time, it was to increase tyre contact patch, as tyre width was fixed. Could be it's IMSA rules, not G5? All stopped when the K3 came out.

Of course "rear ride hieght" explains it in much clearer language.

The term "rake" as used in pipeline construction is a collective noun for "a large number of [insert items, personnel etc.]" Also refers to rolling stock on railways.

Anyway back to the topic.

That's a let-off then.

Tim, was too late to edit last post but after more caffeine it clicked how IMSA cars increased tyre contact patch.....

Back to the plot- Great pics, Brands!

Dear John

I am interested in B26-10 which I believe you owned until about 3 or four years ago; would you be willing to speak briefly about the car and its history when it was morphed first into the Skoda and then back to a B26.

We never had the chance to meet but i am a passionate collector of historic cars and have been involved in the historic scene for the last 10 years or so; before that and in the 70's I ran cars for David Morgan, including F Atlantic and 2-L Sports Cars which he drove with John Lepp.

My email is historic@johnlmhughes.com

Thanks

John
