I agree, (hopefully) a safe pair of hands, and he's familiar with the team.

I bet that some at TMG won't mind if he takes a Porsche 919 with him. Though he hasn't trashed any LMP2 Orecas.

He still has the speed as shown in his LMP2 outings. Hopefully he improved his driving in rainy conditions.

That's what I thought was the only thing that was going wrong with him. He threw it away a few times in the rain, maybe he's had a bit of practice since then.

Hopefully TMG realized they were harsh with their treatment of him (I'm not saying he was wrong to be dropped but the manner of his removal still stands out).
I look forward to seeing him back in LMP1.

He did win LMP2 at Le Mans in 2015 and 2016.
If Toyota are going to make the effort with 3 cars against just 2 Porsches it makes sense to have someone in the car with speed and experience.

It's nice to see that they're not doing something stupid like an all-Japanese lineup without Le Mans experience for the 3rd car or something like that.

What's the story behind that? I don't recall hearing he was treated harshly but is that actually the case? I recall hearing something about his head wasn't in it. But my head isn't doing well in this case either

We still don't know - which only adds to the intrigue - but a driver who has been dropped so unceremoniously (again, I'm not saying it was wrong to drop him based on performance) doesn't usually stick around in the garage for the rest of the season. It's not as if he was doing much else or seriously threatening to leave for a VAG team, and even if he was that surely would have been covered in his contract. I think MyNameIsNigel spoke to Nicolas about this shortly after the season but he was understandably tight-lipped.
Anyway, whatever happened, I'm glad it's working out for him and TMG; a win for the 3rd car would be an emphatic resolution to this chapter.

I think it was something about his private life, too much party or something like that I have heard from the commentator on the TV while a race.

Yuji Kunimoto will be absent from Super Formula Fuji test (March 31- April 1).
In contrast, Ryo Hirakawa will participate in the test alternate for Kazuki Nakajima.
Toyota WEC 3rd car driver will be Yuji Kunimoto, not Ryo Hirakawa.

Great find! This all make sense now.
Hirakawa isn't in Aragon for the Toyota test yet Kunimoto is.

Kunimoto-Lapierre-Sarrazin is kinda underwhelming on paper given who's available. Can never judge a book by its cover though.
