Drink GT1 Round 10 - Lago Potrero de los Funes/Argentina - 3rd/5th of December

THE FINAL RACE TO AN EPIC SEASON!

So here we finally are. The final race of the first season of the new(ish) GT1 World Championship. For the finale you need an awe-inspiring track of epic proportions, and we have that with Lago Potrero de los Funes circuit -Aka San Luis- in Argentina.

Set around the beautiful Lake Potrero de los Funes, this track is the "halo" track of GT1 like Monaco is to F1 and Le Mans to the ILMC. As suggested on the GT1 facebook page could be viewed as South America's version of the Nürburgring. The last time the series was here, was when it was simply the FIA GT Championship with Peka Racing winning in their Saleen S7R beating Phoenix, SRT, Vitaphone and Escuderia ACA Argentina. The track is no push over with 23 corners and the fastest lap time currently being 2:13.236 (Marcel Fassler in a Corvette back in 2008) this should prove to be the ultimate challenge to the drivers this season.

Who has a chance of winning the championship? Vitaphone looks to clinch both the drivers championship and teams championship this year, but can they be stopped?

Maybe...

For all we know something unexpected might happen.

***

It's been fun writing up previews for GT1 this year and I hope to continue this next year. (So long as the racing remains this good.) For my first year of following sports cars I'm enjoying it more than I did with the WTCC so things look good for the future. Ah it's good to be on a forum where I can chat about cars and racing all day! Thanks guys!

Anyway I'm not sure if the times on the GT1 TV page are accurate as Brazil showed, but with some luck Bloomberg can get things right again and we can get it live on our TV's.

I'm rooting for Turner and Enge to pull something out of the hat.

Will this be the shortest off-season between major international races since the ALMS race of 1000 years?

Ah back at San Luis, what a wonderful track, shame it wasnt in the calender last year, should be a good finale to a debut season. I can see Bartel/Bertolini being crowned champions-again (although personally I'd rather see Turner and Enge win) but unless the Vitaphone pairing DNF they will still have enough to win.

As much as I love this new look championship, I do miss FIA GT2 sharing the same race, call me nostalgic but.

Have you seen the entry list?

Not many drivers from the GT1 series will be in Dubai, only some of the GT3 and GT2 drivers/teams will be there, along with some WTCC and VLN drivers/teams.

A handful of GT drivers will be doing Dakar in Jan 2011 as well, so it depends.

*Robby Gordon has officially entered Dakar 2011 his car number is #303

Bartel and bertolini will probably be champions, unless Turner and Enge's Aston makes a good win and the Maserati scores no points. But it will be close, wonder what success ballast will be given to Young driver though.

Young Driver of Enge/Turner will be running 40kg heavier than their closest rival Reiter (and #1 Vitaphone), so I believe they'll finish 3rd in the championship.

Should be a nice finish. It was entertaining back in 2008.

Cool. That makes 2 Argentines JM Lopez to watch out.

There is another Lopez (Juan Manuel, not Jose Maria) that will race with a Reiter´s Lambo. This Lopez is the current Spanish GT2 champion with Ferrari.

Reiter haven't been putting in good races for a while now. Regardless of their weight penalties or not. I seem to remember, despite weight penalties earlier this year, Young Driver still did quite well.

Really enjoyed the racing at Interlagos last time out so will be tuning in today and tomorrow.

Thanks for the info on the time difference. I wasn't sure with it being Argentina.
