Great news from A1GP

The first round of the A1GP winter series will be on the Brands Hatch GP circuit on September 18.

This is a sensible move - apparently there will be a race at Estoril as round two before heading off to the Middle East.

It should be great to see a race for fast powerful single seaters on such a marvellous track.

Has this been confirmed, or is it still "in discussion"?

It's been confirmed the race will be at Brands Hatch and it is the intention to have it on the GP circuit.

It is good to see the GP circuit being used. Who's got the TV rights for it in the UK?

Yes, Sky will show every race live - so we won't get motorsport withdrawal symptoms next winter

That's the intention.
But whether the track gets an FIA safety certificate in time is another matter.

Being approved for the Indy circuit won't be a problem...all they have to do is adjust the run-off area at Paddock Hill bend, like they did for the Champ Car meeting.

...But the GP circuit? That's a lot of work to do in not a lot of time.

If they manage to get the race onto the GP circuit it'll be worth a look, but around the Indy layout? I'd pass.

Just to provide a source for this information - it was announced by A1GP and Jonathan Palmer at the Autosport International Show on Thursday January 13

I know, I was there.
But lots of things are announced at Autosport which never actually happen.

Remember SCV8?

I saw this news on BBC Online yesterday, and was really optimistic until the last paragraph:

It's already been said around the GP circuit any modifications take time, "considerable" is even worse. And, could the question of planning permission radio its ugly head again as it has in the past for proposed modifications to the GP circuit?

That's a fair point Asp - but I think Jonathan is shrewd enough that if he didn't think it could be done in time he would have said up front that the race would be on the Indy circuit.

I think JP would certainly want the public to believe that it can happen on the GP circuit, even if he already knew for certain that the timescale meant it was not possible.

Then he could quietly announce that it had to be switched to the Indy circuit for safety reasons about three weeks in advance and hope it didn't affect ticket sales too much.

Though I wonder how many people will actually go, when there are three other events in Southern England and Wales that day, and all of them are getting live TV coverage.

I`d sooner go to Goodwood but being a season ticket holder I will feel compelled to go to Brands. This all explains the "spy" story I heard at Race Car Live! concerning JP trying to get the Grade 2 FIA licence for the GP circuit......

If these cars race on the indy circuit then imo it will be just as boring as the indy car race. Lets hope that JP pulls out all the stops so he can once again unlesh the great GP circuit.
Whats the betting that the Dubai royal family fund the upgrade under the Emirates banner.

Normally I'd agree Dr V. Indy circuit is rubbish for Champ Car/F3 etc. Don't forget though that half these drivers will have next to no racing experience and will be let loose in 550bhp cars for the first time. I think the entertainment value would be good even if they were running at Buckmore Park! Besides, won't they be picking half of them out of the trees if it runs on the GP circuit – I reckon you'll have at least 80% of the race under the safety car…

I have a feeling that the GP circuit will be nowhere near as "great" as it is at the moment if they get the FIA licence to run A1GP. I`d sooner have it great for the HSCC/BSB/BTCC meetings that it hosts, than have it muted for the sole A1GP event. There`s no point ruining it for a series which may never happen, and if it does, is probably unlikely to have the longevity of all the other serious race series in the UK.

i dont think it will be all that bad the cars will have the boost thing so that should incourage passing and if they get a decent level of drivers it should be Ok.

Apparently they are trying to get some drivers from DTM
