Record Race Distance

1971 Total distance 5,335.31km

Today (and yesterday). 397 13.629km laps or 5,410.71km.

Two chicanes, although still a massive engine and German car. More black smoke though

Well, that record had been under threat for a wee while now.

ACO will be looking long, and hard, at the diesels, I suspect, after that 3.19.6 in the race...

3:19.0 actually, from Duval in #4, and very late in the race at that. Of course the ACO is flipping the script for everyone with the 2011 rules...

One wonders if they will be trying to reduce the overall pace enough to let this record stand for some years to come.

The pace next year will go down a lot. Same weight, but more than 100 bhp less (officially 650 -> 520 bhp).

Add to that smaller fuel tanks (81 -> 65 liter for diesel and 90 -> 75 liter for petrol) and you know the distance record will stand a few more years.

Shame the tractors had to take the record away from "our" Gijs!
But it would happen eventually.

What gets forget too is that there were no Porsche curves but a light but very fast and dangerous kink into Maison Blanche too when van Lennep/Doc Marko set their record

Impressive performance indeed. In fact i beleive all three Audi's broke the record.

We also have a new fastest race lap, in the history of the race. Loic Duval did a lap at 246.463 km/h, breaking the existing record from 2008.

All things considered, with track modifications etc, it is quite incredible, that it has taken 39 years to break the record distance covered, although it nearly happened in 1988. Good to see that Audi, who have been such a powerhouse in endurance sportscar racing for the last decade, will now have the record for a while, if the new rules do what the ACO want them to do.
