Total incidents for Turn 8

Throughout the weekend, there was hardly an event/race passed where there was not an incident in Turn 8.

Has someone been able to log the number of incidents including support events where someone crashed as a result of hitting the armco/getting the entry all wrong in Turn 8?

No, but every year they redesign it and every year it causes carnage - time to go back to the full GP track

You beat me Mike, I was thinking about posting this on V8C as well, some stat's would be good.

Going back to the GP version of the track wont happen . To set up the GP version of the track would increase the cost of staging the event considerably . As for turn 8 . Nothing wrong with it , that a little respect for the turn would not fix .

This is Racing Drivers we are talking about. They don't 'respect" tracks.

I agree with your last statement whole-heartedly Rusty. Just treat the corner with respect that's all. These are professional race car drivers - learn to drive it. The corner is great and the drivers love it.

look at eau rouge at Spa big fast scary corner if you get it wrong your gonna crash, same with this one.

Drivers need to realise that you can't get 2 cars through it.

The main point is was anyone seriously hurt in the incidents? If not, then the corner seems to be safe. (mechanical damage can always be fixed).

Am I correct in assuming that turn 8 is currently the fastest corner used in Australian circuit racing? I realise that the Chase at Bathurst would be quicker, but as far as I can see, there are not over huge cornering loads on that one. Turn 8 is a true corner(ie on the gas on the way out), combined with visibility issues.

I find it surprising that people are blamibg the corner for the carnage... surely there is nothing intrinsicly dangerous about the corner apart from the apparent inability of some drivers to judge their own capabilities....

The only corner i can think of that could be close to the same, speed and danger wise would be turn 1 at phillip island.

cheers

I believe that the organisers are seriously considering reverting to the GP track but not entirely because of the incidents at the sweeper. Apparently because of lack of space for corporate boxes.

I haven't seen the old sweeper since the 1991 Grand Prix but surely the radius of the turn is the same.

From memory, maybe there is a larger area for run-off.

Isn't that where Mika Hakkinen put his McLaren into orbit one year??? There seemed to be a lot more room at that turn in those years, although even then a young Mark Skaife was able to put a GTR on it's roof on the exit...

Turn 1 at eastern creek "feels" just as fast, if not faster, then turn 8 at Adelaide

Lakesides 'kink' along with the kink leading to Honda Corner & Philip Island

The Essess @ Sandown as well

But in all fairness these are all about the same sort of corner as the Chase

Yeah, but all of those corners listed, they have runoff, as opposed to the Sweeper's ZERO run off.

Anyone want to do a similar thing to what they are doing in "Armchair enthusiast"'s thread - My Tracks?
Instead, redesign the Dunlop Sweeper.

They must look at changes to turn 8 to at least try to minimise damage to any car that goes off there, maybe a tyre wall or something similar to soften the impact when a car goes in to the wall.

I don't know, the Chase would have more load due to more speed. Look at Gardner in 1999, Don Watson in 1994 and Thomas Mezera in 1997

So what are the options?

1. Revert back to the old track. The corner at the top of Brabham straight was a slight chicane to slow cars a bit, but there was a reasonable degree of run off.

2. Leave things the way they are, and continue to have big shunts.

3. Go back to what it was, and have some big shunts.

4. Put a chicane in a bit before the corner, shouldn't take up too much room, but will take big accidents at the current turn 8 out of the equation.

5. Pave the area on the inside of the corner, make it a much wider radius corner, move the wall back on the exit, and have it as a flat out sweeper. Still a flat out sweeper, but not so much testicles retracting into back of throat.

6. Remove the gaurd rail on the inside of the corner. Man, that did a good job! More people hit it and were spat out into the wall than ever before! What's wrong with having grass and a decent ripple strip on the inside? It would be much more forgiving, but not exactly the best way to get around the corner, so people probably wouldn't take it...

7. Any others?

Listening to Sports news on 10 tonight, your option 5 (Crash) seems like the way it will go. Apparently there will be something done with it before next years race.

Drivers pay attention to yellows now?

Actually, can i add an eight?

Have the inside and outside edges of the corner covered in concealed star picket ends... people will slow down and be more attentive to prevent flats, but the geese amongst the flock still have the opportunity to have a large accident

I sent a paper to CAMS 2 years ago on this subject, offering a suggestion that would minimise damage, but I suppose because they didn't think of it as their own, well dismiss it!!

If you wish to see my suggestion, please email me at mmciau@ihug.com.au

One option might be a chicane complex like on the Indy circuit but then that might be a bad idea because it could be infested with tyre bundles, anchored with spikes and the officials may have a field day with kerb hopping. The back straight chicane at Indy I mean.

Another might be to open out the corner altogether and make it a sweper with a shallow angle apex, not really a "turn", more of a sweep to the right so it is flat in 6th with more runoff on the outside and no barrier close on the inside.

typos
