2006 SBD Motorsport British Sprint Championship

2006 SBD Motorsport British Sprint Championship

The British Sprint Championship will again be sponsored by SBD Motorsport. They are continuing their support, started in 2005, and are a once again heavily involved as they will be entering a 1600cc OMS for Steve Broughton and Kim Kingham.

The 2006 calendar is as follows:

Rd 1 - 17-Apr Croft - Darlington & DMC; Rd 2 - 06-May Knockhill - Wigton MC;
Rd 3 - 28-May Snetterton - Borough 19 MC; Rd 4 - 03-Jun Pembrey BARC (Wales);
Rd 5 - 04-Jun Pembrey - BARC (Wales); Rd 6 - 10-Jun Anglesey - Chester MC;
Rd 7 - 11-Jun Anglesey - Chester MC; Rd 8 - 17-Jun Lydden - Borough 19 MC;
Rd 9 - 22-Jul Llandow - BARC (Wales); Rd 10 - 04-Aug Kirkistown – Ulster AC;
Rd 11 - 06-Aug Kirkistown - Ulster AC; Rd 12 - 28-Aug Colerne - Bristol Two Clubs;
Rd 13 - 02-Sep Aintree - Liverpool MC; Rd 14 - 17-Sep Cadwell Park - Borough 19 MC.

The number of rounds included in this year’s championship has risen from 13 to 14 which has contributed to the Total Track Mileage for the competitors increasing by 25% whilst Seat Time will also be increased by approximately 20% in comparison to the record breaking levels of the 2005. 93% of the events are taking place on current or past race circuits one of which is Motorsport Vision's beautiful Cadwell Park which is back on the roster for the first time for over 30 years.

As well as the Overall Championship competitors will be battling for the coveted Foundation Cup, the St Johns Trophy for newcomers as well as the various Category awards; all this for a single registration fee of £85.00.

pmoloney should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Shouldn't that be a press release?

Down to 13!

Unfortunately one of the scheduled rounds of the championship (Rd 3 - 28-May Snetterton - Borough 19 MC) has had to be dropped. This means we are down to 13 rounds of which the best 9 results for each competitor will count.

Rd 1 - 17-Apr Croft - Darlington & DMC; Rd 2 - 06-May Knockhill - Wigton MC;
Rd 3 - 03-Jun Pembrey BARC Wales; Rd 4 - 04-Jun Pembrey - BARC Wales; Rd 5 - 10-Jun Anglesey - Chester MC; Rd 6 - 11-Jun Anglesey - Chester MC; Rd 7 - 17-Jun Lydden - Borough 19 MC; Rd 8 - 22-Jul Llandow - BARC Wales; Rd 9 - 04-Aug Kirkistown – Ulster AC; Rd 10 - 06-Aug Kirkistown - Ulster AC; Rd 11 - 28-Aug Colerne - Bristol Two Clubs; Rd 12 - 02-Sep Aintree - Liverpool MC;
Rd 13 - 17-Sep Cadwell Park - Borough 19 MC.

Rd 1 Croft

Entries close tomorrow however they have been full for over a week.

Several Sprint Championship hopefuls have missed the boat.

Registrations are on a par with 2005 and if all the people who have threatened to register actually do then we should be well ahead by Round Three at Anglesey.

The Sprint Championship has once again improved on the value for money angle with greater distances and track times available to contenders. [I'll post the estimated 2006 figures later]

Rds 1 & 2 Update

Unfortunately ill health meant I missed the Easter Croft event which was won by Roy Dawson from Stewart Robb. This pair of Scots repeated the result at Knockhill yesterday (Saturday) and currently are 1-2 in the Championship. At Croft Mike Musson achieved his best ever result with a third place in the run-off but had to settle for fourth at Knockhill when he spun out on his second Top 12 run. Third at Knockhill was Daniel Pickett in his well sorted 1000cc Yamaha R1 powered Jedi; Pickett also heads the Foundation Cup competition.

Championship Standings:
1 Roy Dawson 27 pts
2 Stewart Robb 24 pts
3 Mike Musson 22 pts
4 Daniel Pickett 20 pts
5 Kevin Lealan 16 pts
6 Terry Holmes 10 pts

Rounds 3 & 4 - Anglesey Racing Circuit

What a cracking week-end - sun, sand, sea and spins galore!

Rd 3 on Saturday went to Roy Dawson with Tony Eyles second. Eyles was again second on Sunday this time to Stewart Robb as Dawson hit transmission problems.

There should be a full report in Motoring News on Wednesday.

Rd 5 Lydden - 17/06/2006

We have already lost three championship contenders due to the fall-out from Anglesey. Sue Griffiths and Stuart Webster will not be able to fix the B47 in time. Mike Musson is facing having one of his two engines rebuilt & new bits fabricated for the Force and will definately miss Lydden, but he may also miss out on the following two rounds at Pembrey. Pete Howgate & Brian Woffenden must be rated as possibles for Lydden as they have a large workload to replace the oilpump and also have a quick peek inside the Rover K series engine to ensure all is well.

Never the less it looks like a good day of sprining and it may just throw up a new winner!

Mid Term Update

Lydden went to form with a very tired and somewhat under-the-weather Roy Dawson winning from Steve (SBD Motorsport) Broughton. The heat in the paddock was intense whilst on track several incidents made things even hotter. Steve Miles lost a wheel during a spin at Devils Elbow, Dan Pickett spun at North Bend on one of his class runs but still sneaked into the Run-off where he crusied home in third!

We have just had the Pembrey double header week-end and again following the form book Roy Dawson won both rounds. On Saturday we were running over nearly two laps of the very technical course and Roy's Gould just loved it! We 'lost' Tony Eyles early on when the head gasket went in the Opel V6. Dan and Dennis Pickett had a torrid week-end after a suspension change the car handled appalingly and was scrubbing tyres badly. Dan only qualified on Saturday and finished down the order in sixth. On Sunday Tom Potter had a BIG spin at Paddock and in the ensuing trip accross the grass bent the rear suspension. Dawson found the shorter course more to his liking however his personal target of going 'sub-40' was missed by just 0.06!

Ulster Fry!

I don't know what the hillclimbers did to deserve it but over the three days the only dry one was on Saturday at Craigantlet. Meanwhile in the sprints the usual Kirkistown hoodoo struck again. The venue is well know in sprinting circles as a car-killer and on Friday it saw off Steve Miles/Stuart Webster in the former's Van Diemen when the gearbox broke. Tony Eyles lasted the day (just!) but he then found broken selectors in the Lola's gearbox and had to pull out of the Sunday event. Stuart Robb's Pilbeam developed a slight misfire on full load down the straights on Friday. This then got progressively worse at Craigantlet on Saturday and the Scot withdrew from the Sunday event! Roy Dawson's spin on his last run on Friday slightly damaged the floor of the Gould. All seemed well at Craigantlet but Team Flintstone Racing woke up on Sunday with a flat tyre on the transporter. By the time this was fixed and they were ready to roll they had missed signing on at Kirkistown so headed to the docks and an earlier crossing home. Paul Bond had just scrapped the Crossle into the run-off on Friday and was enjoying a day at Craigantlet on Saturday, that is until he whacked the chicane and damaged the steering. Despite his best efforts he too had to withdraw from the final event of the week-end!

So what happened on track? Friday and local hero John Leinster took the win in fine style. John, who is heroically battling cancer, wasn't the fastest qualifier for once (that was Roy Dawson) however he made the best of the by now VERY wet track and cruised to the win from Robb, Eyles and Dawson. Sunday and a much reduced field although Steve Miles kept us all entertained by switching to his tow-car - a 2.2 litre turbo diesel Mercedes C220 Estate! His 'pit crew' were ready for action and were even contemplating fitting the super skinny spare wheel to reduce drag! In the event Leinster dominated on the drying track as the only over two-litre but Pat Roche's efforts were to be applauded. On Saturday he too demolished the chicane at Craigantlet and then undertook the 5-hour each-way trip back to Wexford to fit a new corner to the OMS. He arrived back at Kirkistown mid morning and then took a fine second in the run-off. Dan Pickett in the one-litre Jedi was third with Pete Howgate & Brian Woffenden bringing their Ralt home in 5th and 6th respectively.

So the championship leaders table has changed once more with Roy Dawson still leading, however it is now Dan Pickett who is in second with Stewart Robb third. Steve Broughton, who wasn't in Ulster over the week-end, slips back to fourth.

Roll-on Colerne at the end of the month when the next round will be fought out on the ultra fast airfield course.

Wiltshire Wonders!

There were several class records and an outright course record set at the latest SBD Motorsport British Sprint Championship round at Colerne on Monday.

Roy Dawson took over a second and a half off the course record despite being virtually unchallenged in the TOP TWELVE Run-off. He also clinched the 2006 title as he moved out of range of the rest of the top runners.

There were class records for Tom Potter in the 1100 Jedi, Roy Dawson in the 3.5 Gould and Paul Perkin in the Mod Prod 205 to name but three.

In the Run-off several Championship Records were lowered - Dave Cutcliffe reset the 1100 record in the OMS he was sharing with owner Trevor Hartland; Steve Broughton set a new 1600 record whilst driving Nick Algar's DJ Firehawk and finally of course there was Dawson's new record.

Roll on Saturday at Aintree where Roy Dawson is gunning for yet another new record!

Aintree Update

Oh my God was it wet!

No one had a chance of getting close to any records what with the standing and running water although it was getting almost slick conditions by the end of the run-off!

A certain Scot won - not unsurprisingly buta as for the rset you will have to get a copy of Motorsport News on Wednesday!
