MILMOR MK5

I have just seen enquiry re the ex - Bryan Small Mk5. I raced the car in F1200 from 1969-1971. It had been acquired a few years earlier (1964?) from Bryan by Harding Engineering and raced by Robin Wescott I believe. It was converted from a side-valve to 105E based engine and raced for several years before suffering a fairly severe accident. I then acquired the bent chassis in 1967/68 before completing a rebuild and using a low cost 105E engine built up by my mate/mechanic Mike Tarry. Though we had constant trouble with blowing head gaskets, we had much fun and good memories. Even managed to win a race at Silverstone.

It was eventually replaced by a Brabham BT15 for F4 in 1972.

I hope this helps fill in a few gaps in the car's history. I hope it gives you as much fun as it did us.

Was this the Milmor which was the subject of an article in the 750mc 'green book' on how to design and build a racing car? will have a look at my copy later to check. I also have the F1200 results from each season, so will see if that gives any specific dates / results to point you in the right diresction of which Autosprt / MN to look for

Well, it won the Chapman cup in '64 as an 1172. Here is a fairly comprehensive spec:

Milmor scan by alastairbrownuk, on Flickr

Will try to dig out the results for the '64 season - I have a printed copy and a scanned version which someone hosted on the web for me. will have a dig about.......

EDIT

Found them - http://oldracingcars.info/750mc/1172_F1200results.pdf

You might be able to track it through the owners listed above through the various years. I'm afraid the original lists I had were a poor copy, so a couple of years are incomplete.

Hope some of this helps,

Al

I see Howard Rose who replied above is listed as running the Milmor in '69 and '70 (By which time it was F1200). Taking the results listed along with the word of the man himself should be proof enough.

Now you just need to ring the various purveyors of old race programmes, autosports and photographs and get the ones for each of the races listed.

Simples!

Al

Silverstone F1200 in '70 or '71. Might the Milmor be one of the blurry cars in this mixed group? (my old car, Mistron / Pandora is the green mid-engined full bodied car with the full width roll hoop)

An Austin 7 box can't be hard to find?

You'll have it finished by tea time!

it wont take it as a 1172 side-valve as Bryan small ran it it produces 100bhp it spits it out of gear, i was thinking about running it with a 997 ohv as it did in the later year as there is more competitions now as sadly 1172 has faded away withj only 4 left in the series now running in with 750's so i need to find a box to go with the 997 any suggestions? as it is eligible for formula 3 and what i am looking to do hill-climbs as with 1172 you are with the 1500's thanks for all your help

I think pre crossflow engines should fit onto any RWD Ford 'box - Bullet, 2000e boxes etc, as ftted to Elans, Lotus Cortinas and sevens etc. An alternative would be a BMC box - minor or midget etc, but probably more effort and weaker than the Ford box. Mk1 Cortina box is proobably your best / easiest bet.

I picked up a single rail early Cortina box off ebay with both hydraulic and cable bellhousings for £50 when I had a Series 4 seven project a couple of years ago, so not too hard to find.

Oh, and I wasn't even born in '71! but my old car was.......

Just recieved a load of old 750MC Buletins, and 'GMT 690' is pictured on the grid on both the cover and inside the August '65 issue. There is also mention of Bryan having a fairly major 'off' in the 1172 pratice at Lydden on 20th June '64.

Will try to scan the relevent sections and post them here for you if they'd help/ be of interest?

I see the '66 results list the car as running with the 1000cc Ford ohv engine. Not sure if you were still looking for confirmation?

And in Jan '69 it could have been bought for £295 ono (apparently unshunted.....) the owner in Byfleet wanting to go into single seaters "if I can find one to fit" :-)

I've put all of the scans into a set on Flickr:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/4464570...7633230675517/

Looking at it, the '66 results have Bryan Small 2nd in the championship in a 1000cc OHV car, but it doesn't say WHICH car - was he still driving the Milmor in '66?

If I find any more info as I look through the magazines, I'll scan tham and add them to the set on Flickr.

Still not identified my car though..........

MILMOR MKV

Mistron,

Further to your question regarding which car Bryan was driving in 1966, it certainly wasn't the Milmor as it was owned by Harding Engineering in both 65 and 66. Bryan was possibly driving a U2 in 66.
I rebuilt the car in 67 and changed it's appearance considerably from the picture shown. It had a more pointed nose, wider wheels, tyres and mudguards and a more squared off tail.

regards,
Howard Rose
